In addition to the state and other lot

in none the less extensive way to the

number of Germans who "play" the

This amount of betting, tho substantial
for German conditions, is comparatively
insignificant compared to that on the

wagering was done at totallsator than

Germany the state takes 16 per cent of
all bets made, but of this amount one
half goes to the encouragement ot horse
breeding and in providing prizes.

FRENCH GIRL LAWYER
FOUGHTJER WAY UP
Mile. Helene Miropolski Tells of
Her Work and How She

London, Dsc. 25.—Mile. Helene Miro
polski, of the French bar, the other day
gave a very Interesting lecture here on the
subject, "Women and the Bar."
It Is four years since this brilliant
young lawyer took tfe oath at the Palais
de Justice and was entered on the rolls.
There have been lady lawyers before her
—four In all—but they had never at
tempted to practice. Now, it was known
that Mile. Miropolski took her profession
In dead earnest, and that she Intended
once and for all to test the question
whether women’s assumed disability to
plead at the bar was not a legal fiction
which would crumble at the first on
slaught. For weeks, nay months, Parle
was divided Into two camps over this mo
mentous Issue.
"What," asked the slaves of tradition,
"a woman at the bar? In toque and
gown! Nonsense!"
And yet, one day not long afterwards,
In defiance of the time-honored traditions
of the Palais, a tall, graceful girl, with
dark eyes, wearing a counsel’s black toque
and gown, stood facing Judge and jury
at the assizes, pleading in impassioned
language for the prisoner In the dock, a
woman.
"My first case.’’ said Mile. Miropolski
to me as I sat in her study listening to
her experiences, "was one of child mur
der. My client was acquitted. Since
then I have pleaded in all sorts of cases,
civil, criminal and divorce, and always
alone. I have defended especially in
•crime passlonnels,’ my clients being
chiefly women, but also men. Indeed,
