Exptrimrnh al Woolwich.—A numerous
body, coui|wvcd of the select committee ot
Woolwich ursoiul and a number of scioutif-
io officers of Uor Majesty's service, u-semv
blod on Wedoosday in the long range ad
joining the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, to
witness tho progress o I sumo experiments
intended to tot a newly proposed uiothod
of fortification. A temporary for trass lord
been erected ter that purpose, composed of
huge quadraugalar blocks of cast iron,
about 4ft- by 2ft. oacb, laid one above tho
other,so as to form u wall about Sit. high,
they wore backed up by slabs of granite,
weighing about 18 tons each. The uttack
was carried on at a distance of GO!) yards
from tbs fortress, the gun, a Go pouuder,
cliarged with 1G pounds of powdor, a wad,
audit solid ball, four) of which wore of
wrought iron, and the romaindcr of cast
iron. The siege, undor the direoliuu of
Major Vundalour and Captain Campbell,
in command of some experienced gunners
of tho Royal Artillery, wus couductel to a
must successful issue after a duration of
about throe hours. At leugth the heavy
blocks wore found to crook and crumble,
one of which was lifted from in position
and thrown in splinters to the ground.—
Twenty-four rounds were fired, one half
only taking offed; the other half ware em
bodied in tho inroad at the hack, but no
sooner had the olevution of the gdn and iti
rango been ;correctly obtained than ehot
aftor shot told with destructive effect. Af
ter the .twenty -fourth round the fortress
was pronounced utterly untenable. Tho
wrought iron shot was concluded to be in
finitoly superior for that especial purpose
to out iron, tho latter cracking into atoms
with tho concussion nod solid resistance of
the iron slabs, nhilo die former appeared
tooling to tha surface with moro destruct
ive effect, and fell to the ground merely
battered.
