ATLANTA, OCTOBER 14, 1857. k I Times tUattry Character. Tho Now York Coarior and Enquiror of Saturday baa a timely and woll digested artiolo upon this aubjei t. Mon must be al most moro than human, if in times of pro moted financial preasuro and agony, they do not oommit somo errors. Judgment is often warped in the dilommS''of pressing neosgilty, when the heart ia right and honnst. Things done for the host often prove otherwise. Tho Courier continues: "When the mind is at easo it can Btand to the right eaeily enough; it ie when hard presaed that tho danger comes. Xhoro are hundreds whojtold firmly to thoir honor in fair weather, and jot throw it overboard io the tempest. They imagino they can su save themselves, or at loast mitigate the wreok. In an extremity they do that which in ordinnry times, they would not think of for a moment. “Now, of oouree, perilous times bring with them their pooniiar necessities. Evo* ry buainees man when carried into 8traits ( is bound to try every honorable expedient and use every lawful rosonrcc to extricato himself. Hie ingenuity, and skill, and ad dress, within this range, should be exertod to their utmost. Not only duty to himself requires this, but duty to bis fellows in ths business world, bis oreditor, who would suffer in his ruin, end perbsps be dragged down with him. Thore is no nobler sight then amerebant thus manfully oontending against a "sea of troubles,” It realizes the ancient saying that “a good man strug gling with adversity is a epectaole sublimo to tho gods.” But when distross ond diffi culty excite meanness and artifice, and tho worst instinots and basest feeultiee of the seal are enlisted for the rescue, every claim upon human sympathy is lost. Tho man beaomee a traitor to himself, a traitor to his neighbor, and a traitor to his Cod. A stain is fastensd upon the oharaoter that no time oan eSaoe. A sting of self reproach is lodged in the aoil that no future good con- duot oan remove. There is no grosser fol ly than to eaorifioo principle for tho objeot of sustaining credit—to fall as a man in order to keep up as e merchant- Tho at tempt almost, inevitably fails. "Ths 1{ directed struggles only pluiges deeper into'emberrasament. The fetal line of wrong usually takes its start from cow- - ardice. Many a business man does not kfiSw how be standi simply because he is f i/rjwl to examine, and oontsnts himself wilf, /staving off present difficulty as he best - may* with nothing like nelear understand ing as to Jila means of finally saving him- salt Our modem stylo of business is deoi- dedl vcnleulated to foster that habit of mind, lhort is, as compered with the gigantii socle of etmmproial undertakings, an aotu- al deficiency of. ready cajUnl—ol available means or prudence. Not only bat oapital been wuted in the most multifarious and lavish expenditure—in speculation end luxurious living—hut tho probable resour ce, of the future have been over-estimated end anticipated, credit has been discount ed,- and has for t!>e time been used up. Too many business men, abandoning the home ly, cautious, end' straight; forward exact- ness of thair forefathers, in their vast’ com plicated and constantly over lapping ope rations seldoA ttop fo ascertain ’what, out of any speoifio receipts, is gross inoomo and what net profit; their in-eomlnge are forthwith re-inveeted; loth in business and in their houeehold nfiatrv they pay their way by ‘'drawing;” nod a realised sarploe is a phenomenon which they, Inly koow it retrospectively, If at ell. It is trifling with—nay, faithlessly' betraying tho interests of others which are intimate ly, perhaps vitally, concerned in tho dis- crcotost management of hie affairs. It is the business of a man in onibarmsscd cir cumstances, firet of all to get tlio-jtvholc truth before him and tako honest counsel with himself. Then if bo discover no euro mode of honeet escape, to placo the whole truth before his creditors, and tako their counsel.” Nothing can nltimato more to the future advantages of men who have been unfortu nate in buainees than a full consciousness of having acted honorably. By so dorng, tho same ond oven greater respect and con- fidonco may bo secured, after failuro in bu siness, titan existed before. Character and integrity of purpose constitute tho capital for futuro operations. These command sympathy and rospect. “Misfortune,” said an honest merchant, “ was wade almost sweot to me by the kind expressions drawn out by it from so many of my fellow-citi zens.” Tho Courier continues: "Amid ail tho calamities which have overtaken us, it is a consolation to reflect that, thus far, American merchants have met their trials like honeet men. Tboeo who have stood, have stood by fair moans, and tboeo who have fallen, h&vo fallen horn orably and loyally. Dissimulation, and’ trick, and fraud, aro hsrdiy beard of in connection with the trying transactions of tho times. The spirit of justice and o kindness, and of forbearance, overvwboro reigns uppermost. Every day nbonnds willt instances of the highest moral gran deur, hath in tho wav of doing and in tho wav of suffering. The Amorioan merchant had never better reason to be proud of hie class than in view of the last month’s fear ful history." C. HOWARD, P. 1L, AUssita, Wimshsllstreet MsrcM3tU,lS57. 1 Wear 1 Midim ami Malaria arc tho great death agonts throughout the largost portion tf the habitable globe. .Miasm is malaria, but malaria is not miasm. Miasm is an emanation from decaying ing vegetation. Malaria is bad air, wirnt- evor msy bo its source, All impure air is Malaria. Miasm ia so rarified by a sun of ninoty degrees, that it rises ranidly above us, and is innocuous. The cool of the morning and evening of summer timo condonses it, and oauscs it to fall to the surface of tho oartl), whoro it is hkeatbed by man, and is the fruit ful cause of pestilence, plagno, and epidemic fevers. Thus, tho higher persons sleep above tho surface of the earth, the healthier is the atmosphere. Whiter** a general rule, it is better to sleep in apartmonta having a window nnd the fire-placo open in all seasons, yet wh rc miasm abounds, evidencing its presence by chills and fever, fever end ague, diarrheas, and the like, it is batter to sleep with closed windows than to have them open, because men aro known to fatten in jails and small prison ceils, while the breathing a malarca a single night has originated diseases which, from tho violonco or their action, arc scarce ly distinguishable from the effects of swal- l.wing corrosivo poison, as witnesses the National Hotel disoasc. But although the air inside of a itouso is supplied irom tho outside, yet if tho win dows and outside doors are closed, it is sup plied in such small quantities, through the orerices, that it is at one heated by the in door air, and carried to tho ceiling, nhero it whore it is above reach. The difiereneo be tween the thermometer in our hall and the one outdoors, about five o’clock of a sum. raer’s morning, is ten degrees. Hence, du ring the prevalence of miasm, nt least in August and September, it is better to close thh chamber windows, but let an inner door and the fire-placo be kept open.
