Woman In tho Hireling States.
A letter from an esteemed lady correspon
dent, in one of them so-called free States, '.ut
mare truly called hinting Slates, in the Fur
West, gives the following graphic portraiture
of female white slavery, in that region ol
theoretical freedom, where, so far at least, as
woman it concerned, it is the custom to
"keep the promise to the ear anti break it to
the hope.”
“ Although wo have not "the peculiar in
stitution’’in these 'fret States,’ necessity
imposes a terrible servitude on poor free
born woman; and nothing is more common
than the total transfer of all domestic labor
to the mistress of the family, (falsely so call
ed here,) by tho ‘ hired girl,’ at aov moment
it may suit her oonvonienco, or pleasure.—
This has been my own ease, with little inter
mission, ever since ’ my jewel ’ felt her im
portance and Bounced away in June last.—
What would my Southorn friends think to
come on me suddenly, and see mo acting
cook, chamber maid, dinner waiter, in a
word, 'mud of ail work’ 7 But such indeed
is the faet and 'too true to bo a joke.’ Such
are 'tho comforts' that womon thamsolvos
are vindicating in their opposition to the
blaok man’s slavory, unmindful of their
own bondage to tbeiv eo-etyled free intlilu-
tioru’: Iaometimesbeliove that, if only tho
African female were in bondage, all thought
of universal emoooipation, (so far as woman
it the objeot,) would die a natural death.—
Certain it li that the Abolitionists them
selves impose more heavy work on their own
wives, than slaveholders do on tboir slaves,
expecting their ‘better halves’ with all the
cares of wife, mother end ourio, to do tho
whole work of the haute, yard and garden
besides—In a ward, as mnoh as six of your
darkies will do, or are even required to do.”
