M’e w uld re pectfu U call alt' n ion to an

one great tnurco of inspiration. .
An Englith truvollor has recently Issued
a book i f di coverles In title country,
Antony other things, he gives tho follow
ing story relative to Gen. Wm. ’Welker,
which he prolVses to have learned from a
gontlemun from Nashville, who had been a
school companion of Geir. I Walker's end
who related 19 him many particulars of his
early history t
“Walker, first of all, studied divinity,
und it.was probably only in consequence
of the doubts find perpioxiiies that so of :
ten dis'urb the studies of our young theo
logians, that he abandoned that study for
mcdiciue. This too he gave up for'somo
reason after u time, and took to law, which,
as you know, is in this country often
synonymous t > politics. In New Orlcaus
lie connected himself with the press ; but
here, in addition to law and physic, lie had
an episode of love, which though not
mentioned in the public accounts of his
career, had, I believe, a great effect on his
fortunes and character, and the story of
which 1 had from a soucce in which 1 can
K ut every confidence. At Now Orleans
c became acquainted with a young girl,
very beautiful and intellectual, but deaf
and dumb.
‘ M’alker was first attracted tothiayoung
girl by sympathy for her melancholy pri
vation, but a tender feeling soon arose,
i r d on her part, ilie young lady bccamo
passionately attached to Walker. Indeed,
not being aware of tho usual restraints
which the eonvjglionaHties of sociely imj
I ose on females under such circumstances,
site displayed her affection in a moro open
nianrcr than was pleasing to her friends.
This led to some restraint, und iniaunderl
standing, and estrangement, und the poor,
beautiful, but speechless girl, thinking
herself deserted, sickened and died. From
that time, Walker was a cliangod man
lie went to California, fought a duel, acd
tliea joined a band of desperadoe .—
Thenceforth the sickly, studious milk
sop was tho stern and daring udvenlur-
er.
•The story sounds romantic, l confess ;■
hut it is tiio only intelligible ,dun I have
vet received to the strange revolution which
is admitted to haro taken place in this
mans character. It must have required
some great mental shock to transform the
siekly. yellow-haired boy of Nashville
into the stem Nicaraguan fillibuater.—
Why should it not he blasted love, and the
vision of his broken hearted, deaf mute,
dead for love of him I To an imagination
such as his must be, a vision like tills
may woll become a permanent and power
ful reality, casting tis dark hue over his
whole career and character. Ono thing in
Walker 1 do admire—1 mean his silence."

WOOD’S RESTORATIVE^—Of all tbo re-
itoraiives for tbe hair that have been invented,
Wood’s pre-eminently claims the fir*t place. It
will certainly restore the natural color of the hair ,
if the directions are fallowed for a sufficient length
of time. It has also produced astonishing effects
in bringing out a growth of hair, whero tho heail
had been previously bald. Wood dots not pro
Herd that it will do this iu ail cases: and we think
his candor is a good recommendation of tho vir
tues which his restorative really possesses. If
tbe roots of the hair are destroyed, no human
power can make them grow again; bat where
there is any vitality left in the root, tho restora
tive will soon renew the hair in all its pristine
vigor. It has deno this repeatedly when all other
remedies bad failed. It is therefore worth while
in all case* to make the experiment. For clear
ing tho head of dandruff, and thickening and
strengthening the hair it has no riral.—Western
Patriot.
