ATLANTA, OCTOBER 27, 1857. From the Nathmtle Union ;fr American. fitn. Pillow’s Reply to Gen. Scott’s Card. Nashvili.x, Oet. 16, 1857. To the Editori of the Union jr American : Tbo card of Ueo. Scott, recently publiibed in tho Notional Intelligencor, was evidently intended to produoo the impression, that tbe statement in my addreis to the people of Tenneeeee, to the efieet that he bod caused to be paid to Santa Anna 810.000 under tho Paebh negotiations, wets untrue. It will bo remembered that I did not say that Gen. Soott Aad paid this money to Santa Anna. My statement was, that Mr. Trist said, at tho conference at hie head quarters, that Gen. Soott bad adranced him tbo morn, ey, and that he bad paid it over. I know the money wot not paid info the hands of Santa Anna—for bo was in tho eity of Mexico and we were in the city of Puebla, about eighty miles apart. ‘The money was, no donb», placed in tho hands of aoertain Britieh official—the medium of tbe correspondence between Mr. Trist and Santa Anna. Gen. Scott says in his card " I certify on honor that I never, at any time, paid to Santa Anna, or caused to be paid to Lim, or to another for his uso or bonent, one dollar or more, on my acconot or in any manner whatever. * a * a a a "This blander of Gen. Pillow grows, no doubt, out of eome bint bo confidently picked ap about bead quarters that I bad paid that precise sum to und •■ ■■ ■ for im portant information reoeivod—and to be con tinued from tho enemy's camp and armies.” Geo. Soott bore admits that he had paid that precise earn to for — , but be denies that be paid the money to Santa Anna, or to any person for him. “Though this denial. Is native, and is a mere quibble, yet, inasmuch as it may be understood as a dental of the truth of my etatemeate, 1 have procured from tho record of the War Department at Washington, copies of the eworn statements of Generals Quitman and Sb.elde, extracts from which are herewith submitted to the public, from which it will be seen how far my statement was authoriied by tbe faota. I did not suppose Gen. Soott would have ventured upon the denial of facts, known to be so foliy ptoven by officers of the bigheit respectability in tbe army, and gentlemen of the most unquestionable cbnraoter. With theso proofs I submit tho points in controversy to un intelligent public, not deeming a word of comment nocossary. All the other statements in that address remaining nnoontradieted, the conclusion it Inevitable that they are truths, not admitting of dsnial. Tho Reoorda from Washington being too voluminous for'publication with this card, I only publish each portions as relate to tbe point in ietue between myself and Gen. Scott, but any gentleman desiring to exam ine the whole record can do so by applica tion to mo. Respectfully, QID, J. PILLOW. GEN. QWwdCf^TATEMlNT. About tho middle of July last, (1847, was summoned to attend a meetiog of ol cert at Gen. Scott’s quarters in Puebla, Mexioo. I there met tbe Qenerel-iu-ohicf, Generals Pillow, Twigge, Shields and Cad- wallader, and I think OoL Hitchoook, Acting Inspector General. Gen. Worth was not present, and Gen, Smith's absence was ac counted for by Gen. Scott,-who said that be, Smith, had been consulted upon tho. dun. wur, Tbe OtneraKin-Chief first dwelt npon the great Importance of pence to our couutry, and the anxioue desire of oat Government to bring it about. Uo said that influenced ebiefly by these important considerations, and bis belief that u mpvomont upon tho capital would eat off all prospects of an amicable adjustment of our difficulties, he bad halted Urns long at Paeble. That Gen. Pieros, With a considerable -body of troops noder his oommand, was shortly expected to a -rive— that our cambers were too woak fur the enterpriie before m, and that he ex pected reinforoements would be important to ui. llo therefore requested .the opinions of tho oflUera present upon the propriety of awaiting the arrival of Gen.' Pure a. He alio stated that be desired to oooralt them upon another subset of great dolioaoy and much importance—that tbe praspecti of i were now slight, but tbat bo was ins I by some foreign rcoldento In Mexico e desirable object could certainly-be 1 by the tenet application^ it an num of money. That the Mexican «rxpeoted tha negt Halloas tobeat- l with a douceur. 'OmMirej-fBWJa Mg of i ranting without it—tint tho 'urn of money for each purposes wss justified by the practice of other nations, ami. that, considering the great good it would in this iailanee bring to our country, he regardrd ine means as mural and proper, and did not i^rceiro h6w aoy leneible man coatd think othcswUt. He further added that Mr. Trist bad.no power or instruction! to usetlio three millions voted by Congress, or any part «f It, to such a purpsso—that the same must bo aM0t»M&riM .tbs 0*8 of the treaty— that, howover, if it should ho considered ad visable, he, Gen. Soott, had credit in Mexico, half of dollars to apply to tho purpose, o which he regarded as 11 bread thrown upon the watora” OEN. SHIELDS’ STATEMENT. On or about ths 17tb of July, 1847, I received an invitation to oall at Gen, Soott's headquarters in Puebla. Invitations of this kind were at that time frequsnt, and were intended to bring the principal officers of tho army together for ths fake of social inter' oonrae. Such at the timo I regarded this invitation. In tbe course of tho ovening Gens. Pillow, Quitman, Twiggs and Cod' wallader joined us. After eome dissultory conversation, Gen. Scott said that ho in tended to consult us on a matter of some moment—not as a council of war, but as friends end brother officers. lie thereupon read a letter from Mr. Trist to himself, in whieh, ns near as I can rccolieot, it was sug gested that tho .MoxicJU authorities were destituto of morns, and that the writer, Mi. Trist, had good reason to believe that aju- dicous application of money would enub.c us to obtain a peace, and requesting Uen. Soott to use bis efforts to raiso a million or a million and a half of dollars for that'pur- pose. Gen. Scott having read this totter declared himself in favor of the project as ths only means of procuring a speedy and satisfactory pace. He stated that be had means of raising tbe money, and that under tho circumstances, the course wee justifiable in points of principle and expediency. He also stated that he bad already applied a small sum, lay ten or twenty tjjscS send dollan, and that ho regarded it as bread thrown upon the waters.” ^ofessiowJ CrftUeUrts ®lmtors RAI B-ROAI) register.
