Our young and amiable, though ines-
penned correspondent from Milledsjevil'c,

the Banks, sod appears to he willing to
grant rftem nil the indulgence they crate,
which does not comport stall with our
feelings, principles, or the position of this
paper. We ire not with the Bank party
of this State, or with the Bank parry in the
Legislature; and we write this, simply to
correct any misapprehension as to our
position, and to correct an impression

of yeas 45, nays 50.
There was some disrnvsionon this motion

reconsider so much of the journals as re
lates to tbe rejection of tbe House bill mak
ing the Governor President of tbe Board of
TrooVere of IbeState University.
There was some discussion oa this mo
tion: There in favor of reconsideration,
urging the declining state ef tbe University
as a reason for making tbe Governor Pres
ident of the Board, in order that the causes
which operated against the prosperity of
the College might be removed. Others
argued that the duties of the Governor was
now onerous,-that he could not attend to
any other duties.
Motion to reconsider was carried— by
yeas 46, nays 43.
Those who spoke in liver of the recon
sideration were Messrs. Bartlett, of Jasper,
Shropshire, ot Chattooga, and Thomas, of
Gwinnett. Mr. Dawson opposed the re
consideration.

terday's journals, as relates to the bill lost,

This has indeed been a day of rteonruU

against Israel that “my people do not rort-
liJer. Might not Georgia make the same
complaint against her Senate ! If Sena
tors would consider more, they might have
to reconsider less. Sober second thought,
however, is sometimes best.

sing the committee on enrollment to correct
the discrepancy between the enrolled and
engrossed copies of the Main Trunk R R

Thurston, on plea of insanity. After some
discussion the resolution was lost, on the
the. ground that pardoning power was solely

A bill to amend the divorce laws of this
State, so as to make cruel treatment and
habitual intoxication sufficient ground for
divorce. Lost.
The Jud, coin, reported that the present
session under the amended constitution,
would hat 40 days, and adjourn to meet
first Wednesday, in Nov. next. The Sen
ate resolved, after several propositions, to

nesday nights last—(the 1st and 2nd lasts.)
1 attended an exhibition of Mr. Roger’s
School nt the Atheream. To my surprise
I found that spacions building crowded to
its utmoct capacity. Rarely if ever have
such large audiences been gathered together
within its walls, and it wrs evident from the
pleasure and gratification manifested in ev
ery countenance, that they had been agreea
bly surprised in tbe extent variety and ex
cellence of this interesting Exhibition.
Tbe exercises consisted of declamation-
dialogues, music singing Ac, by the pnpils
of Mr. Rogers School. On Tuesday night
tbe smaller boys, comprising tbe 2d ar.d 3d
classes declaimed, nod oa Wednesday night
the 1st chtss, consisting of tbe more advanc
ed scholars.
On both nights the performances were
agreeably varied by Dialogues—comic nmi
serious—singing and Callisthmic exercises
by the finish scholars, and last but not least
bj the music of the City Orchestral Band
discoursed meat sweetly between the scenes.
The girls, all dressed in pure white,
whither singing tbeir gleeful chorus, or exe
cuting the figures of tbe graceful Callisth-
mics, or performing in comic Dialogues, with
matronly gravity—aU looked as sweet,
pretty and charming as only He dear crea
tures can look. Without them, the exhibi
tion would have lost half its interest and all
its beauty.
In declamation, tbe boys, from the small
est to tbe largest exhibited, a moat uncom
mon degree of advancement. With but

Nrw Yobk, Dec 6.
Two humlroypmen employed at the Erie
Railroad Depot, Piormont, wore discharged
on Thursday,.having refnseibto work at re
duced wages. Olliers were hired hero, but
on arriving at Piermont tbe discharged
workmen resisted the landing ol the new
bands, ami compelled them to retreat. A
(Kilicc force was procured from the city, and
uuother attempt to land was made last night
but tbe mutineers, numbering COO, were
posted on the landing with cannon, und pre
vented disembarkation. The steamer with
the new hands on board hauled off, and a-
waits further orders.

John Rules, of Hprinqfield, III., came to his
death in a terrible ina tner on Sept. 13th ,
near Columbia, Oregon Territory. Tho
'Ihiolumnr Courier says that he bad boon in
dulging freely, and being rathor noisy, a
friond volunteered to st-' bint home. After
some trouble ho was mounted upon his
friend’s horro, and for greater security, his
lego were tied tozoti: r under his belly. The
party then set ou: for Springfield, Rules com
penfon leading the horse. When near tbe
lower end of Broadway the animal became
restive, reared and fell back upon his rider,
but immediately sprang up nad galloped
away liko tbe wind- As tbe horse got to
bis feet the saddle taroed with Rules, and
being fastened to the beast, at every bound

lumber yard, upward,of a quarter of a mile

The Marshall rsported that he had ex-
amiaed the bog pen, on the Georgia Rail
road, eomplaiued of by petition from Mrs.
M. A. Lee, George Lyon, and others, and
find it a nuisance, being partly in a pond
of water where it accumulates much filth,
which will be a fruitful source of sickness
in hot weather. It is also located so ss to
injure the value of private property adjoin
ing by the noise and offensive effluvia
which arises from a large lot ol hogs.
Ordered, That the Marshall give notice
to the parlies having control of raid hog
pen to abate the nuisance, and if not done
to proceed against them.
The Ordinance Committee reported the
following Ordinance, which, alter the
third reading, was passed:
AN ORD1NACE.
For tho security, wslfarc and interest of the
City of Atlanta, and^ tho more effectually
to secure and protect the property of the
citizens from danger of fire, by jirohibit-
ing tbe erection of wooden buildings in
certain parts of the Uity, herein speci
fied:
Sac. 1st. Re it Ordained by the Mayor
and Council of the City of Atlanta, and it u
hereby ordered by authority of the same,
That no person or persons shall, after the
passage ol this Ordinance, build or erect, or
cause to built or erected, any hoase or
houses for any purpose whatever, the walls
of which shall he constructed of wood on
any street or streets within the following
boundaries, to-wit;
On Whitehall street, between the inter
sections of said street with Mitchell and
Marietta streets; on Mitchell, Hunter and
Alabama streets, at any point between
Loyd and Forsyth streets; ou Pryor street,
between Alabama and Mitchell streets; on
Decatur street, west of Collins street: on
Market street*, south of Walton street, or
on Peachtrc* street, between Marietta
street, and the jnnetion of Market street
and Peachtree street.
riKC. 2 Be it further ordained, That any
person or perrons, who shall be convicted
before the Mayor or throe Members of Court
cil, of a violation of tbe first Section ofotbis
Ordinance, stall be liable to pay each fine
as nmy be adjudged by said Mayor or three
Members of Coaacil, not exceeding Fifty
Dollars and costs.
Sse. 3. Be if further ordained, That any
person or persons, who shall be convietes
as provided in Section second of this Ordid
nance, shall be subject to a fine of not ex
ceeding Fifty Dollars and coats, for every
three days that be, aba or they shall permit
