Death of General Si Henry Have

yesterday morning, bright the melpocholy
iatclligence otibe death of one of England's
greatest soViien in the Indian, War, Gen
eral Sir Henry Handoek, the hero of Lack-

in the month of .December. This blow most
he e severe one to tho English in their pnu-
eat critical rittarion in Indie, as General
HMdoekiihy hr* coarse during this war
teems to hate dettbp.'d talents, Ml com-,
maader.tbai has acquired for him a most
enviable ttno-sn, as one of the peat Cap
tains of the Age. We know hat little of
the previous history of this great soldier.
We teen that a great portion of his Hie has
been spent as si' subordinate in India, he
not having attained his captaincy anti*
twenty-three yews service in the army, in
inferior positions. This was a long-training
for a soUSS bat it donbtkss was what fitted
him by its hardships and ample experience,
for the poet of commander, which he has
i!led with ao muh honor to himself and
suceem to bis country. Since the mutiny
of the Sepoys, in the month of Jane Ust
end the siege of Delhi and Ladtnow and the
massacre of Cawnpore, General Havelock s
name hu been identified with all the sue-
caeca of tho 3rituhanny in India and he will
hereafter be regarded as one of the greatest
warriors of the age.

ATLANTA, January 27, 1858.
We have but little to record in the way of
change in our market* yesterday. Though
the rain nnd wot weather, which prevailed
u!l day, interfered to some ex font, yet there
waa a lively buaincei carried on. Cotton
went off at ten cents—the news by the Ea-
ropa indicating a tendency to decline not
materially affecting the Atlanta market.—
Corn selling at 43. Oats 40 cents. For
other quotations we refer to our prices cur*
roa*. It Beemi generally to be conceded in
New Y'ork that tha commercial rcruliion has
passed sway wills tbe old year, and that bus
incss is being restored to Its former condi*
tion.
Mi- increase of coin in tbe vaults of tbe

corroborate this. .Stocks too arc being
bought und sold at better rotes than for the
last lour months.
The farmer should now tuke advantage of
preent prices, und send in all their produce
to rnaiket. This course on their part will
greatly facilitate tbe return to a wholesome
state of monetary affairs.
