Now it is well known to our clrixens tha<
the board of corpora'ors on opening tbf

the following resolution, viz:

In 1867 Providence blos-dd the oountry with
bountiful crap which bus given a new im
pulse to the friends of thb enterprise, and
tho stock list bat bean increased to what n
is, Meantime the crisis in Qnannialmatter,
has transpired, am) while it hu« operuted to
retard to some extent subscriptions, it ha>
also operated to redne- the price of Railroad
Iron from *65 to 840 per ton, and reduced
ako the ptfes of provisions and latwr about
in the same proportion, making thereby the
building of such a Road ns the Air Lim
cost fully $300,000 less than it. could have
boon built for under the- prices of 185G.—
■The probability is that the price of irou
will not get up agaio under three or four
years.
This Btste of prices makes to the Compa
ny's subscription ol 8650.000 row more thou
equal to 760 thousand dollars in I860, and
mprices stood when the foregoing resolution
wns passed. But Ibis resolution stands in
the nature of a contract between the corpor
ators and the stockholders and cannot be
repealed.
Again it is supposed with good reason that
in letting out the contracts lor work on the
Road to be paid partly in stock, tbo stock
list can be increased from $1,000 to *1,500
per mile, and from 81,000. to *150,000 for
100 miles. Rut this increase of stock cannot
he muds available until the bqilding of the
Road is commenced.
The Company bad jast and valid ground,
to expect that the State would lend encour
agement and aid to this enterprise, but tb

seen and felt tbe rawsrity, and are embarking
in Ibe-e enterpriKs But none ever had ur
ever can have a more imp .riant enterprise
than the one Atiaota has in band.
Tue aid that is asked from Atiaota ia small
compared with that of other cities It will
nut increase burdens iu tire least before tbe
means of laying are five-fold augmented
It is on tbe plan of each citizen taking -
small amount of stock—for every dollar paid
tbe payer gets that amount in stock of tbe
Road.
Mr. L. P, Grant, who is well qualified to
judge and whose istimates are reliable,
makes tbe business of the Road when com.
ploted, aa follows, which would be 15 perot.
un the estimate cost:
■'Passenger traffic upon it 8303,000; freight
*200,000, making 8500,000. The expense
of running, and the neoesaary sinking fuod
far the renewal of iron, ice., he places at
*250,000, leaving 8250,000 for net profit,
enough to pay well on an investment ol
*25u,000. 'The C3‘ imated cost of tbe Kuad
oy Mr. Alexander Worrail, the gentltmau
who made tbe proliminvy survey, is 81,581a
215. But Mr. Grant-remarks farther: *My
opportunities fur estimating the amount of
travel have boeu go xl, and yon may fully re*
Iv rely Upou five times tbe present number
of through passengers from beyond New Or*
leamvwneu the chain bet.eea Mobile and
Ricjiuood shall be perfected. Tbe number
passing annually beuwetn New Orleans aod
the Atlantic seaboard, may be estimated .at
100.000 each way, of which twa lines tnro’
our State got some six thousand each way.
(£uite ouo half this travel may be seeured to
th s rouo', {the Air Line,) with the chain
complete betweeu Mobile aod Richmond.
The amount of travel which will be trib
utary to the Air-Line Read, and seewrefroa
competition, exceeds that of any Road, in
Georgia.”
Thu is the measure which the people of
Atlanta are o*ked,to Bave from raid. • We
ask you to do it despite the powerful influ
ences and moaua that are employed to defeat
it, both within and beyond the limits of this
city. We repeat, the great point to bo gain
ed and tbo great object of this city subscrip
tion, is to savs this enterprise from failure
aod ruin, aod put it on tout, at least uotil
ample means and aid from other sources can
b.- ubtaioed to finish and equip the Road.—
After the amount of labor that has been exs
pended up. n it, and after the hearty cu op
eration and large list of stock formed aloog
its line, alter the aid and encouragemeit that
has been given tu it by our city authorities
and citizens, is it asking to A much of tbe cit
izens of Atlanta, as a community, to sustain
this work!
