We learn that our yonng friend? James B. Shaw, hao been appointed to the responsible position ol Money Clerk at the Southefn Ex- pi eao office in this city. This is a promotion which wus well merited, as the gentlemanly Ue- meanm ol Mr. Shaw will attest. A Good Move — We see in the Councll.pro- reedlngs ol 1 riday night, that a resolution was ottered by Alderman E. P. Howell, that the po lice be instructed to lake up all persons found begging on ibe streets, and have them trans om led to the Alms House, where proper atten tion can be given them. This is a mallet ol no liitle imporianct! to the citizens ot Atlanta, and should be attended to my all means, as there are several urchlos, both male and female, In the city, vftio bang around the streets and have uu other means at getting a living save by beg- ging- t Water Works,— lu the report ol Council proceedings that appeared In our paper ol yes terday morning, the movement made known to the body ol an enterprise looking to immedi ate action for a supply ol water lor the elty, was by oversight 0! our reporter left out. We , eg 1 ot this, as no enterprise could be started In wb.ch our people would feel more lively Interest than In the construction ol wider-works lor our city. It seems from the statements of Dr. J. G. Westmoreland, President ol the" Atlanta Canal .1 Water Company." made to the Mayor and t oiincil on Friday night, that about the first ol April the Company was organised, aud now make known to the city government their ob- j. ct, asking tor the consideration of propositions (or an abundant supply ot pure water, aud ne gotiation ol li-tnia, upon which the amount lor public consumption will Ire lurniBlied. The organization as staled to Council, was commenced at a meeting ol the corporators, by the election ol E. W Holland, J, .1. Thrasher, W. E. Westmoreland, J 0. We hope thai the hurmumons ami concentra ted eflottn ol those engaged in thin e'lderprisc will rpeedlly lead to practical results. l'UE Bailoom Ascension.—The attempt at carrying out the pr. giatumc, so vividly depicted )»u paper, proved to be a “ b irst" in the literal uense ol the word. Nut couuit uaucing the belief at all lint any great success can lie attained In going up In 'a heated fur balloon, but lutllng a th sire to see the trape/.u perlurraauce up iu miJ air, we were among the observers and witnessed the disappointment. Rumor has gathered several cause* tor the lalluie. One was that the wind being too high, blew the balloon over upon the mouth ol ihe furnace and a hole was burnt In the side ' Tis said that all judder, excitement generally end iu smoke, aud the saying was duly vended in this Instance. The crowd felt keenly their disappointment, and went aivny growling lor their halt dollars. I'hey were iu a manner cooled down, however, by the assurance of another trial on Monday, to give them lime, no doubt, to ponder over their loolislmcs* in being so easily duped, and U> rest contented with their Just reward. The mana gers seemed to be well up to a knowledge ot the fact that human naiuro is prone to be the dupe of some stylo of huinbuggery. Assisted by sd interesting flow of language the greatest " bum ’’ will meet with considerable success. In the instance of the asconslon, the fact a tingle man wonltl go up perlorming on the trapeze, and teeming to think instinctively that the balloon would bo obliged to go up to a considerable helgbt, created a novelty that was almost irre- siatsble. As the result proved that which was inevitable Irom the nature ol the thing, they became convinced*, at lead of a failure to realize their expectation! and broke for home, cursing Hercules and bis ascensions.
