We Again call attention to the advertisement
o! MaJ. Madison Bell, tbc Comptroller General
ot the State, of the Wiid Lands not returned as
taxable property, and cannot too strongly urge
all parties interested, in any ol .tbo lots so ad
vertised, to go forward immediately and settle
the taxes and all charges legally made, for not
returning the enmc, and thereby save not only
their lands hut themselves lrom further cost and
trouble.
The Comptroller General will certainly pro
ceed to collect the taxes by levy and sale ot all
lots or parcels of lots ol land, upon which the
taxes are not paid at the expiration of sixty days
of his advertisement ol -aid list ol wild lands, as
are advertised in the supplement ol the Lntkl-

It is gratifying to learn, however, that many
of.the parties interested in said lands, have al
ready gone forward and settled the taxis due

Atlanta is not overwhelmingly in Uv-ir ol the
immediate establishment of a system of com
mon schools, such as is proposed at the expen.e
ot one hundred thousand dollars to start on,
with the proajiect of increasing the amount to
one or more million of dollars, simply to lie free
to all the children of the city—and this of
course means white and black children—in a
word, a mixed school.
Thfero is no authority in the Constitution lor
this act on the part of the Legislature to confer
any such power upon Atlanta.
The city cannot tax the citizens, with or
without thcirconsent, for any such purpose.
We advise the voters to reject this hill ahmiM

pfpperly considered, that any one would lavor it
The Constitution makes it thfc duly of the
legislature to establish u general system of
education in the Bluto with the power to raise
a school fund by taxation, and the late General
Assembly possed an act on that subject, which
was approved on the filth ol October, T^70, and;
no doqjit it will Ik* put in o|>eration throughout
the Stale, and the citizens ol Atlanta will be
heavily taxed to support the schools in euffij
•Yard, and each di-trict in the county, and they
will lie disagreeable and sickening enough tor
our people.
This general bill numbers twelve png' • m the

that opposition, which the Bouth gave to them,
though crushed out by the result of the war, is
being espoused and pushed forward by the
mighty West, which, under the stimulus ol

It would indeed lie a loud task to find a par
ullel for the anxiety with which Radical carpet
baggers seek office, and their zeal in that par
tieulur has never been equalled or surpassed
except in the tenacity with which they hold on
to a good lal office once secured, in Alabama
they got possession ol the State and revelled in
the luxuries of the people’s money so long that
it became intolerable to that people, and they,
with a mighty efiort, cast oQ the galling chains
which thetr carpet-bag masters hud wound
around them. But now when the jioqple have
spoken through the ballot box an I declared
their will and choice we find that the Radical
officers of the Btate want to claim a right by
prescription to the positions which hie accident
ol war and the mischievous will of ibe oppres
sor were instrumental in putting them into.
Through some miserable subterfuge there were
no elections lor Senators held, and consequently
that body being composed ot the same old crew
ii intensely Radical. The members ol the
House of Representatives, having been elected
by a vote of the people, are Democratic Gov
ernor Smith, the late incumbent, (Radical) and
Mr. Bingham, late Treasurer, sued net an in
junction restraining the presiding officer of the
Senate from counting the votes tor Governor
and Treasurer. Knowing that their opponenta
were elected, they thus seek to prolong their
urra ol office by delaying the declaration of
the result of the election. However, Mr. Moren,
who was elected and declared Lieut. Governor,
counted the votes for Governor and Treasurer,
and declared Lindsay, Democrat, elected by
1,425 majority, ard Grant by 2,500.
The Radical Senate recognize Bmith os Gov-
vernor, while the Democratic House give
preference to Limlaay. Alabama thus haa two
Governors, and her aflaln are consequently in a
muddle.
