Messrs. Hudson, Mobley and Rus-ell, Irom Hamilton, Harris comity, were in the city yes tcrday, and they gave us a good report of mat ters in their county. Dcmorrnllr Fariy. Wo admonish all true Democrats not to be milled into the belief that the mission of the Republican party has ended; lor the truth i», the mission lias only begun, and the opposition to their reconstruction measures arid policy, both past und present, must be, and shall be, met by the true Democracy. Mr, C. H. SAnoKANT, of the Cincinnati /■.’-*• quirer, called at our sanctum, yesterday, on his way Trom Montgomery, en route lor his home, and gave us an Interesting account ol matters ol differences existing between parties at Mon: gomery. Mr. Sergeant understand) the situs- tion, and takes the right view ol things gen erally. We were pleased with him, and tru-t his visit to the South may prove ■ • r,-d I him and the paper ho represents. Prof. Otto Hparr is getting up an amateur society ol young ladies for the production ol the charming furry opera, “ Lai.a." The per formance will Cake place at an early day, au-l the proceed* are to be devoted to the Lee Monument Fund. W on<loi tut. We were surprised while in our businf-w- *.fficc to see Mr. John Tollcsoa, quite an old citizen, call lor a copy ol the Imtki.liuiuicbr, and pr-. ceed to read it without the aid of spectacles, and asked him it it was possible that be c.-uld read without glasses V He said yes. We invited him round, and requested him to read the lead, r in the morning paper, und he did so to thu sur prise and astonishment ol geveral parties present Mr. Tollesou informed us that he was in the eighty-first year of ids age, and had a living wile by whom ho had raised seven children, two girls and live boys, and that ail were living except one son who was killed in the battle at Kennesaw Mountain in the late war. His sons were ail in the Confederate army It is remarkable how some men and women can preserve their eye sight, and read without the aid of glasses, and others destroy their sight by the use ol them. Much reading sometime# is like overmuch righteousness, not very profita ble to either the eyes or soul. As lime goes ou each day brings prosperity in our good city. A lew persons, however, who, with a tmblanct of advancing our interests, arc all the while, to tluir utmost, destroying our reputation and disregarding the Lest germs ol our popularity, to satisfy a part-zau let-ling Actuated by the most stilish motives, they seek to deatroy the rights ol our oldest and beat citi zens, and build up on their ruin their own for tune. And still they arc countenanced and looked upon as th? regenerators ol our reviving city, and receive praise where contempt bh-mld be their due. Let the people note their own true Interests regardless ol “ rings " and party iuti-r- eats. Beck them out and then strike boldly lor them, and we can better benefit ourselves than by leaving our municipal atlairs in the hands ol avarice and uncertainty. Public and private Improvements are ol the highest importance and should be encouraged by our people and the city authorities, but not to the extent of sanctioning the expenditure ol large amount* of the people's money to gratity the demand.ol. “rings" that lortn lor the acquisition ot ltrge profits. Such will bank rupt any city. We were glad to meet our old and esteemed triend, Thomas W. Brooks, in our sancutu, * u yesterday, who had just returned Irom a visit to TexMi. We learned Irom him that, about the last ol September, he and ids brother, A! bert W. Brooks, in company with Mr. Kidd, of New York, visited Texas lor the purpose ol looking at the country and making some in vestment*, and that thoy were highly pleased with the lands and the appearance ol things generaiiy; that the citizens enjoyed fine health, and were very quiet and law abiding people. Emigration to the State was increasing, aud was last aettling up the country; that on his way home, in traveling one hundred aud twen ty-five miles, he met over seven thousand emi grants, consisting ol men, women and child ren, ail Irom the Western Slates. There seems to be a tendency among our people to go to Texas—known in pant years ns the Lone Star State—and a glorious star she is among the American stars ol States. We were also glad to bear direct Irom our old (Head, Dr. U. W. Brown, firmcrly ot At lanta, now residing at Waco, Texas, an-i that he wai in good health and doing a fine prac- 1 tie*. The removal of Dr. Browu was a loss to Atlanta, bat we hope he will reap a rich re ward whereve^e may cast his lot.
