Bach is very f.rcibiy illustrated by the muta
tion* in the afiaira ot Georgia doting the two
yc*:s that Congress has been dallying, for sinia
ter partv purposes, with the political afiaira ot
that Slate In 1868 Georgia chose, under the
reconstruction of the State which Congress bad
deliberated and tatty established, tour Demo
crats and ihree Republicans to the House ot
Representatives, and to the Senate one Demo
crat and one Republican. With ibis, how
ever, a Radical Congress was cot satisfied. It
was not what reconstruction bad bargained Cur.
The House in a moment of unconscious hones
ty, admitted the members thus chosen; but the
Senate, happening to be awake to duplicity, re
fused to the Senators the seats to which they
had been elected. This threw the mailer into
contusion, and ted to the repudiation ot the
whole workot reconstruction, and to a renewal
of the attempt to bring the State completely
under Radical rule. A new election was ac
cordingly ordered, the result of which tbe grasp
ing party have acquired not more than two
members, and neither ot the Senators, unless,
through the legerdemain which the Senate has
already sbown a disposition to practice, the
dearly and fairly expressed will of tbe people is
set st naught.—Btttan Pott.

The pleasant result of the meeting is well
known. Tbe shot of Mr. Clay passed through
his opponent’s coat Mr. Randolph discharged
his pistol in the air. He bad previously said he
would do so, but, npon tbe folly of standing to
he shot down, had replied:
“ Well, if I see the devil in Clay’s eye, PU

The Instance the pistols were discharged, Mr.

“ I hope you are not hurt, Mr. Rando'ph. For

Of ferocious insult, with avowed purpose to

had savagely reviewed one- ot Moore's earlier

gone beyond. The criticism was tall ot per
sonalities. Motives were impugned ; base designs
were charged. •* There is a deliberate attempt”
laid the reviewer, “ to corrupt the readers ot

The alternative was adopted. One doe* not
