•rue CowcucUcut Election.
Wo acknowledge oar groat disappointment at
ihc result of the Connecticut election. We were
led to bollere, from the tone of the press of both
parties in that State, that the Democracy would
carry the generalticket by an increased majority,
and gain two members to Congress and a ma
jority In both branches ot the Legislature. The
precise result la not yet known, but enough is
known to show that the Democratic party has
met with dtseomflWre. This we regard as un
fortunate on account of the moral c fleet it may
have at the present Juncture of affaire at Wash
ington. It will be regarded as a set-ofl to the
Democratic inimpb in New Hampshire which
stimulated the Democracy with new life and
hope, and produced contusion amounting almost
to dismay in the Radical ranks. Wden we shall be
fully informed how this result hts been brought
ab ut, we have no donbt it will be assigned in
soma measure to that triumph as the exciting
cause. It will be found that a powerful and de
termined effort was made by the admiuistratioo
to carry Connecticut—that all its power snd
patronage were brought Into requisition. These,
with fraud and bribery, aided by tac nqrro rote,
will account lor the result. The means thus
resorted to may convert the success ol the Radi
cals into a barren victory.

Washington very poor, snd now is one ol the
richest al the Capitol, illustrating tbe Ibrifl that
follows t&wuiug. But, even admitting all that
i» said in derogation ol Mr. Bumner, including
Fred. Douglass' denunciation, it does not alter
the incontrovertible lacls adduced by the tiena
tor, or relieve the President lrom the u’jwns s
charged upon him. He threatened witn war
a power at peace with us—hu sent the navy oi
the nation lo intimidate that power and to su»-
tain a usurper, wilh whom he proposed lo trade
foratnieu properly. This Mr Sumner proved
by offical documents, aud no one has been able
to q"a b a single specification in ms indictment.
[Boston Post.
On Thursday lastthe President, accompanied
by ms aids ot the Treasury and Navy, not sol
dtersyei, came to the Capilol, Then, accord
ing to a “luy&l” witness, ‘ various Bcuatora
were sent for, among them Me.-srs. Wilson,
Pomeroy, Morton and Chandler, and several
nu mbers ot the House, including Messrs Mayn
ard and Mercur. They were an hour or more
in consuliation. The result was, a message to
both Houses, recommending legislation in view
ol the -disturbances al the South I" “Benstore
were sent lor," aud they went, aud a hybrid cau
cus was held, and a mersage was cuncociei!
Tne “ makter” do not like lo venture into ihc
Senate Chamber. He is a modest tuau Fen,
a* are the Democrat* there, they are brave, de
termined men, who would to hia lace have de
nounced tne intrusion. Mr. Sumner was there,
and at that very moment ou his lent. Judge
Trumbull and Senator P.tterBon, men not to be
trifled wilh, were tnere, olid they yet " stand by
their order." So he wlosiled, or touched a byli,
or, in royal phra-e, ordered tLe attendance ol
his " faimml Commons," and, lo ! Wnson and
Pomeroy and Morton aud Chandler, hilarious
henchmen, obeyed Ibe call, aud tbe lueseage
was reshaped -- Washington Patriot.
It i* Senator Carl oc..uiz, a positive and re
cugiit/. - d R -pnblican, who tells ihe people Ex
ecutive usurpation ot power is creeping with
cat-like step* upon the coumiy. The declara
tion to so serious, coming lrom such a source, as
to startle tbe public mind. Nor is il the Presi
dent atone wno is the usurper; he is sustained
by an obedient parly, whose Representatives
voted hi table the Sumner resolutions in the
Senate, and the House is doing the Executive
will by placing supreme power over tUe Slate:
in his hands Has the reaction began any lo<
soon? Wbat hope lor republican liberty in the
Union remains, but by breaking tnrougb, while
tt is yet possible, those party oomts yfjtjtch are
all that hold Executive usurpation in place.—
Boston Post.
Tdr Washington Capital says “the President
has created offices without authority oi law,
filled them without regard to propriety, and
seduced Congress, by the help ol hia creatures
to be the plastic adjunct ol his imperial depart
meat. Co-ordination there is none Tne Ex
ecutive to tbe party and tbe republic. Pernaps
not without knowledge did Frank B air predict
that tbe Presided would have his way with or
without law, and without advice, and that there
waa danger in him."
