Fashion.
A COLUMN OF 008SIF FOR TUE GENTLEMEN, OX
SI’BJECTS IN WHICH THE LADIES TAKE NO IN
TEREST.
The ladies wear mohair dresses and more
hair head-dresses.
The first recorded victim of trichina was He
rod. " He was eaten of worms and gave up the
ghost."
Corsets are now being made of leather. This
is doubtless in obedience to the poet’s request:
*• Hid#', oh, hide thoae hiili* of snow * "
“ Four hostile newspapers,” said Napoleon,
“ are more to lie feared than one hundred thou
sand bayonets.”
The last novelty in dresses at Paris is the toi
lette u 1st Pleutre, (Anglin, devilish, according
to Victor Hugo,; made entirely of different color
ed ribbons sewed together on a muslin skirt.
The Owen County (Indiana) Journal says that
Sam Curtis killed his favorite dog yesterday.—
The reason was, there was a couple of specimens
<>! the tilting hoops perambulating our streets the
day ltefore. The dog “saw too much to live.”
According to the latest Paris fashion, the cor
sage, obeying the decree of the demimonde, has
become so shallow that any real connection with
the shoulder and arm is intolerable. The ladies
content themselves with signitying the connec
tion by a couple of narrow tapes.
liul wer says that “ Female friendship is to a
man the bulwark, sweetener, ornament of his
existence. To bis mental culture it is invaluable;
without it all his knowledge of hooks will never
give him knowledge of the world.”
The Indianapolis Ileralil is unable to disclose
the name of the new head dress the ladies have
lately adopted, but says “ it looks like a section
of Newfoundland dog-hide, tanned with the hair
on, drawn thightly over the half of a muskmelon,
neatly combed and oiled, and fastened on the
hack of the head.”
An egotistical, foppish fellow, whom Sidney
Smith had one day invited to dinner, was fre
quently boasting of the company of great men
he had been keeping, to the infinite disgust of
his companions. The conversation turned on
acquaties : “Lord Byron was an excellent boat
man. He and I once rowed across tlie bay of
Naples,” said the fop. “ Yes,” said his host,
“ hut with a very different pair of ww/fo.”
A New York elegant is now arrayed in very
tight pants, so tight that in the effort to stoop the
person thus dressed feels himself unexpectedly
straightened ; sack coats are so short that they
somewhat resemble a sailor’s round jacket; the
vests button close to the throat. In addition to
these, a broad turn-over collar of the Shakspeare
style, a narrow rimmed hat, constitute his dress
in most, cases. The prevalent color is brown, so
to be fashionable every dandy must be “ done
brown.” This color varies from a reddish brown
to a brindlc brown. Many of the most dressy
dandies wear coats, vests and pants of the same
The Boston Pod is responsible for this cruel
thrust : A New York weekly editor says mourn
fully, “ We have no heart to dwell upon the in
decencies which French demi-monde Fashion lias
been thrusting upon us.” We presume the poor
fellow let bis-7/c.v dwell upon them until lie lost
his In art—and that’s what’s the matter !
Whoever is courteous, honest, frank, sincere,
truly honorable, generous and candid, is a true
gentleman, whether rich, learned, ora laborer.
To be a woman of fashion is one of the easiest
things in the world. A late writer thus decribes
it: “ Buy everything you don’t want, and pay
for nothing you get; smile on till mankind hut
your husband; be happy everywhere hut at
home ; neglect your children ami nurse lap-dogs;
go to church every time you get a new dress.”
A literary gentleman whose courtesy in a cer
tain matter a pretty woman had rewarded with
a kiss, was so well pleased with the mode of
payment, and so little satisfied with the amount
that, judging by the following epigrammatic re
ply, he is likely to prove a rather inexorable cre
ditor. Wc don’t blame him:
One coin, ho delicious, alone
IMye more than you owe me ; and yet,
While you have a mint of your own,
Don't uxk me to cancel the debt !
The latest New York sensation is the simulat
ed slipper, which has been the Parisian sensation
for at least a month. The following is a descrip
tion of the novelty: It is a gaiter, made after
the old prunella pattern ; but, instead of a pru
nella, it is of woven silk—stocking pattern—and
is beautiful worked in white and colored floss.—
The foxes of the gaiter are white kid, with real
lace—rosettes, with silver aigrettes in the center,
and high Louis XIY r heels. It is laced up at the
side, otherwise it looks like a beautifully fitting
kid slipper and stocking. The advantage of tile
simulated over the real article is, that beneath
the imitation stocking is satin jean, rose-colored,
but very strong withal, and capable of bearing a
strain of lacing that would compress any foot,
however unshapely', into its own beautiful pro
portions.
A woman says wliat she chooses, without be
ing knocked down for it. She can take asnooze
after dinner, while her husband goes to work.—
She can go into the street without being asked
to “stand treat” at every saloon. She can stay
at home in time of war, and get married again it
her husband is killed. She can get divorced
from her husband whenever she sees one she
likes better. She caa get her husband in debt
all over until lie warns the public not to trust lier
on his account. But all these advantages are
balanced by the great fact that, she cannot sing
bass, go sparking, or climb a tree with any de
gree of propriety’.
An Armenian prince and his wife were taken
prisoners bv Cyrus, who asked him it he desired
his liberty, his kingdom or his queen to be re
stored to him. He replied, “As for my liberty
and kingdom, I value them not; but if my blood
would ransom my wife, I would cheerfully give
it." Cyrus restored them all. The prince asked
his queen what slie thought of Cyrus. She re
plied, “ 1 know not; my mind was so taken up
with the man who offered his life as my ransom,
that I could think of no other.”
The latest fashion of Parisian society is thus
described: "Very lately, at a conversazione to
which only gentiemen were invited, given by a
certain ambassador and bis wife, the latter dis
appeared at midnight on plea of indisposition of
a sudden and severe nature. Half an hour af
terwards Madame entered the drawing-room
draped apparently as if she had suddenly arisen
from her bed, but it need liardlv be said that Un
cap and rolte d> nnit were ot the most exquisite
and piquant description, suggesting, perhaps,
M ile Piceoloinini in the last act of the ‘Traviata.’
The husband and the company stood equally
transfixed with astonishment, when suddenly
Mine, de M. cast off gown and cap, as easily as
friar casts bis cowl, and stood like a meduvval
saint draped to the very ground, but without the
faintest suspicion of crinoline.”
Ax insurance agent in Memphis lias presented
each member of the tire department of that city
a policy of £1000, insuring them against acci
dents of every description.
