Connecticct—and we flu not say that we
iove her—has a good corn0.011 school system,
and virtually compels chiferen lo avail them
selves ot its advantages. The last Legislature ot
that State passed a law Which requires three
months schooling each year the legai condi
tion of employing minors sender "fourt-eco yearn
ol age. If any manufactoier nr other person
shall hire a minor contrary so the provisions ot
the law, be forfeits 4100 to t ie State Treasury
for each oflense. The schools ot the State are
free to all, and now the poorest people are com
pelled to educate their cnildren, since their em
ployment is absolutely conditioned upon such
education.
We hope that the little interest excited on the
subject of education by the Convention of
Teachers recently assembled in our city will
not be permitted to die out. We cannot think
of a more important subject, to arouse attention
than that of education. Everything should be
promoted now that wifi have a'good influence
in developing the mind by giving direction to
thought and to motives ot action. The South
more than ever requires that her people should
be taught; that her people should be led in the
path ol duty; that direction should be given lo
their immortal spirits Outside of education,
lew of the good things ot this world hardly
recompense tlie necessary industry to acquire
them. Riches take to themselves wings ; glory
is deserving ol respect, but it is unstable; beauty
is to be admired, but it fades; health is a good
thiDg, but it is easily impaired; strength is de
sirable, but is a prey to old age. Education
does not take wings and leave one; sickness
does not impair it, nor old age weaken it; iu
fact, time mcreaseth knowledge. Education
comprehends all the improvement "of the mind
Irom the cradle to the grave, and every man is
what education makes him. . The astronomer,
whose mind recently scanned ihe universe wait
ing the approach of that eclipse ho foretold
years ago, or hist night interpreting that great
phenomena ol nature, the comet; lie whose
spirit can soar beyond the boundaries of time,
and discern iu tlie past, the. present and the fit
lure the-all pervading Spirit of God; is equally
the .child of education with him who knows me
God, and whose soul feels not the want of sci
ence. It is education that makes condition, aud
happiness or misery. To maintain themselves,
it is important now that all our people should
lie educated to a certain exteut at least. An
other time we will refer to this subj. i t.
“ Employment Saves prom Crime ’—Daily
we see numbers of colored persons, who lounge
at the street corners, bang about tlie ear shell,
and have nothing to do; whose thoughts of the
future seem perfectly torpid ; or who cannot re
sist temptations to gain a living otherwise than
by stealing. Consequently every day the num
bers ot colored persons who are up before the
officers ot the law are increasing. They seem
to picture a condition of independent indolence
as the only tiue state of human felicity, this is a
mistake on their part, and ii followed up will
only continue them in crime, want, and trouble.
The idle white mambas no real enjoyment, and
lor him the liiuire is wrapped in gloom. This
is true in regard to the black man too. Those
colored persons who have no settled business
we advise to be making arrangements to get
employment in the country ; fodder palling will
come on alter awhile, and then cotton picking.
To the black man we would say, give up Jaw
ing, politics, and loafing, there is no money in
them for you , and earnestly and honestly go to
work, and our opinion is, that il you do not, in
a tew years your race will become outcasts.
Yesterday was taken up by the court in con
sidering what is knowD :is the.“mandamus case.”
This is a case of claim against Muscogee county
brought by Peterson Thwcatt, as administrator
of A. S. Rmherlord, deceased, fo: mer clerk ot
ihe court, lor cost that had accrued m insolvent
criminal cases. Judge Duer r< lused to pay the
claim or to recoguize its validity, whereupon a
writ of mandamus was asked ‘of ,1 udge J .ha-
sou to compel Judge Duer to levy a tax to pay
this debt. Judge Johnson, after hearing argu
ment, i-sued the order asked lor, but not without
expressing a wish that the case might be taken
up to the supreme Court.' Judge Dner will
carry it up —Cohiinbui Sun.
