Young Folks AN OPTICAL ILLUSION. Amusiny Experiment With an E 23- shell and a Mirror. An interesting experiment may no made by taking an eggshell and trim ming it with the scissors so as to re duce it to a half shell. In the hollow bottom roughly draw with your pencil a cross with pointed ends. Pore a hole about the size of a pea in the center of the cross. Place yourself so ns to face a window, the light falling upon your face, not upon the mirror which you hold in one hand. Close one eye. Place the shell between the other eye and the Ai I) siss, ITOW TO HOLD SHELL, mirror at a distance of two or ihree inches from either, the concavity .fac ing the mirror, as shown in the picture. Through the hole in the she!! look at the mirror as if it were some distant object. While you are so doing the concave shell will suddenly assume a strongly convex appearance. To de stroy the illusion it becomes necessary either to open both eyes or to with draw the shell away from the mirror. Tile nearer the shell to the mirror and the farther the eye from the shell the mere readily comes the illusion.—Sci entific American. THE FOOLISH KING. Thrcs Questions Ho Propounded and How They Were Answered. Cnee upon a time there lived a king who was very foolish, lie thought he Was hotter than any one in his king dom. He thought he was wiser, and he wanted to be richer. Now. there lived in his hind a very rich man. who was known far and wide for his line din ners, and when the news of this man's entertainments was made known to the king the foolish king sent for him ii. great wrath. “How dare you outshine me?” thun dered his majesty. “For this j’ou shall die.’* “Please, uiy king. let me live, and I’ll do your every wish,” cried the rich man. “On one condition will I grant you your life.” said the king, “and that is if you answer me throe Questions with in the next three days. If your an swers are absolutely*correct and true. I will make you my prime minister; if not. off goes your head. First, tell me to the very day how long shall I live? Secondly, how long will it take me to lido around the world? Thirdly, of what am I thinking?” The rich man went to his home and consulted his kooks, and on the third day he again came before the king. “I am ready, to answer your three questions. “First.—You shall live until you breathe your hist. “Secondly.— If you rise with the sun j.. ... Upon his arrival at New York last week Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen of the Mikkelsen-LefHngwell polar expedition, which started north two years ago and which has been credited with proving the existence of land north of the un explored sea, explains that he didn't do anything of the kind. His observations indicate that there is no land there, but he returns with the belief unshaken that there is land north of the unex plored sea. This belief restsVlargely upon the flight of birds in that direc tion. On Ids way 'back Mikkelsen T.alked something like 3,000 miles, from Flaxman’s island to Valdes and Nome. Lellingweli remained at Flax man's island to engage in survey work. A Bulletin on Rabies. “Rabies and Its Increasing Preva lence” is the title of a bulletin just is sued by the department of agriculture. It ridicules the idea commonly held that the mndstone is a specific against rabies and declares unwarranted the common beliefs that mad dogs will not go near water and that if a dog crosses a stream it Is proof that he is not af flicted with rallies. It is asserted also that there is no such thing as “ring days” i;i connection with this disease, the period from duly 1 to the middle of August being so called be: a use then the dog is above the hori zon with the sun.. The Pasteur treat ment is credited with having greatly lessened the mortality from this disease among human beings Cvcr .the Alps by Water. 11. G. Hunting reports in (he TeeJj uieal World Magazine how an Italian engineer named ('amimula has under taken to transport freight across the Alps front Genoa to Basel by a novel system of water tulms. linking the Med iterranean with the Baltic and North seas. The tubes are to be constructed in pairs parallel at inclines eorrospon 1- ing to the natural contour of the land, with open water levels at convenient intervals. Water derived from the mountain streams and lakes will be used to fill the tubes, while gates at each water level so control the inflow and 011 Blow that while the water Is rising as out* of the parallel tubes is tilling up the other tube is emptying into it. Thus a boat floated into the upper end of one of the tubes passes down the incline to the lower end as the water level falls, and at the same time this water, let into the twin tube, may lift another boat from the lower end of the incline to the higher. The boat, both in rising and descending, is kept at a proper depth of water by two running sheaves placed upon the prow and below the stern respectively, which will guide the boat on its way with two rails fixed longitudinally on lop and bottom of the lock, springs be ing provided to avoid shocks.
