Col. T. C. Milner has just re
turned from Atlanta, where he has
been to learn the status of the bill
• seeking to put the solicitor gen

he finds that at the last session of
the legislature Mr. McMichael, of
Marion, introduced a bill to change
the fee system to that of salaries
that the bill was referred to the
special judiciary committee and
reported back favorably and that
> jthe same is now on the calendar
and will lie taken up in its order
for passage. Col. Milner true to
his pledges to the people, is doing
all in his power, to procure the

THE THIEF THAT PASSED
SUNDAY NIGHT
Sailed Away With
Mule and Buggy.
The thief that passed through
Dade county last Sunday night
was one of the most bold, ener
getic and notorious that has visited
this section for a long time. He
began operations near Rising
Fawn by taking Mat Allisons mule
eaddle and bridle a little after
dark He proceeded north to A.
M. Tatum’s farm where he took
the bridle off of Mr. Allison’s mule
turned him loose and placed the
bridle on a fine two year old iron
gray, 16 hands high mare mule
belonging to Mr. Tatum. The
latter animal bad never been bro
ken to ride and the thief evidently
lead it on to Trenton where no
doubt growing weary walking and
leading the animal, he visited Col.
J. P. Jacoways barn and appro
priated one of his buggies and a
set of harness to his own use,
hooking the mule to it and pro
ceeding peaceably or. his journey
toward Chattanooga.
Mr. Tatum heard a noise at his
barn about the time for the thief
to get from Mr. Allison’s there,
but let it pass uninvestigated, Col.
Jacoway was sitting on the poarch
of his residence when he passed
with the mule his buggy and har
ness, but never once thought the
party passing was a thief.
It was not known until Monday
morning that the theft had been
committed which having been
early in the evening before gave
the thief several hours the start.
Sherilf Thurman was notified and
he at once got into communication
with county authorities of every
countv in this section of the state,
in East and north Ala
bama, notifying them of the theft
and ofiering a reward for the cap
ture of and return of the thief and
property.
Wednesday local parties together
with a deputy sheriff of Chattanoo
ga were trailing the fugitive and
property and came across a suspic
ious looking character who to some
extent filled the description of tie
party sought and arrested him,
taking him to Chattanooga for
trial. At the trial yesterday sev
eral witnesses testified that he was
the man they saw with the stolen
property. lie is being held by
Tennessee authorities until the
| Georgia officers get extradition pa

U, $, DEPUTY
MARSHAL J, Fi CAMP
Destroys Wildcat Still.
rnm—mmmmm—mmmam
United States Deputy Marshal
J. F. Camp of Dalton, and two
other parties on a rade for a wild-1
cat still on Lookout mountain near
Rising Fawn on the Walker county
line captured and destroyed an
illicit whisky still of a hundred j
gallons capacity last Monday a
week ago. They also found 25
gallons of whisky and 2,500 gallons
of beer and two parties operating
the still. They succeeded in cap
turing the whisky and beer, but
the parties iu charge proved fas
ter runnel’s than the Marshal and
his assistants and they succeeded
in escaping after a lively race. Mr.
Camp chased the distillers several
hundred yards to a very rough
gulch where they being better
acquainted with the premises suc
ceeded in escaping through the
rough.
The whisky was taken in charge
by the officer, the beer destroyed
and the still cut to peices.
One of the parties in charge of
the still at the time of the raid was
recognized by the officer as being
Jack Nations, a*notorious wild
catter and well known by him.
The other party was unknown.
Mr. (’amp stated that these
parties have been operating at and
near the place of capture for
sometime, but it was only recently
that he finally located them. He
also states that this makes several
stills that he has captured in that
vicinity since the state prohibi
tion law went into effect about a
year ago. He also stated that
wildcatters are more numerous.in
the mountain districts of the state
since prohibition than ever be
fore.
Mr. Camp and his son, who is
an electrician by trade, spent the
4th with Hon. W. \V. (Ju reton of
Rising Fawn, the elder Mr. Camp
superintending the preparation of
the barbecue for the Baptist pic
