No ballot was necessary, as the tide of sentiment had set irresisti bly toward the Indiana candiVtat 1 , state after state registering the Jr del egations in his favor, and all other candidates withdraw ing belt re the uni versal demand for his nomination. But the steady line of states which joined in seconding Kern’s nomination scon made it apparent that the chances of all other candidates iiad been extin guished . Votes Given to Kern. Mr. Towns in person was the first candidate to recognize the decisive nature of the Kern movement, and iii a ringing speech he withdrew his name from consideration a"nd nl< deed his support to the ticket of Tip an anu Kei n. Delegate J. T. Kill, of Georgia, who in nominating Mr. Howell had made quite a hit with the convention, rose and withdrew Mr,. I low elk’s name, and seconded Kern for Georgia. Withdrawal quickly followed frc.ru the supporters cf McNeill, of Connec ticut, leaving the Indiana candidate dope in the- field.
