Suppose the Chattanooga News
and tho people of Dade County
Ga., should decide to run the
New’s candidate No. 13 for con
grcss, in the 7th Georgia district
two years hence. The Avhrt? In
our opinion both would be to doc
tor afterward for the disease of
“political folly. ’ ’

Trenton also has a skating rink
in her school building. But there
hasn’t been no disturbance raised
about it as yet. The people in this
community must be more liberal,
in their views, than some of our
neighbors, or perhaps these boys
don’t “chaw terbacer” and spit
the juice all over the Avails.

We are Granted a Hearing.
I am advised by the State Bail
road Commission that the petition
of citizens of Trenton and vicinity
for improved depot facilities at
this place, has been set doAvn for]
formal hearing before the commis
sion at its meeting to be held Dec
3rd 1908, at which time the Board
trusts that all par ies at interest
will be represented The citzcns
of Trenton and vicinity will berep
rese n ted. Ed i tor.
At the request of our county
school commissioner we are pub
lishing at other places in this issue
papers from the pens of tAVO of our
young lady school teachers on
timely and important subjects.
The commissioner and others that
hear these papers read before the
assemblage of teachers here last
week pronounced them Avorthy of
publication and think they should
be carefully read and their con
tents observed by every patron
and school trustee in the county.
There is a ditch near the south
end of the depot at this place
which Avas made by the railroad
company for the purpose of drain
ing surface Avater from the streets
not under the depot platform. The
ditch is about 18 inches deep and
is near the platform open in the
public highways. It is very dan
gerous to the traveling public and
was demonstrated *Wednesday
1 light when, in the presence of a
large crowd, immediately after
train No. 1, south bound let its
passengers off. a lady passenger
and her little child proceeding up
the street and fell headlong into
the ditch, receiving a lively shake
up and barely escaping serious in
juries. This place must be fixed.

Dade county will have five con

therefore will be hired out.
CHURCH NOTES.
Dr. Ward of Abingdon, Va. has
been holding a revival for the past
ten days and much good lias been
done. Some of Dr. Ward’s best
sermons were, ‘‘There shall be a
resurrection,’’ and “How shall Ave
escape, neglecting so great salva
tion?” Sunday morning lm prea
ched a missionary sermon.
It has heen several yearss since
Trenton has had such a successful
revival as the one which we ha ve
just witnessed, Dr. Ward had the
support of our pastor, Rev. H. K.
Allison, and the prayers of all the
Christian people of the town.' Many
were convicted, some have heen
taken into the church, and others
will be taken in at an early data
The choir did excellent work at
the meeting. Scarcely a service
was held that the young men of
Trenton did not take an active
part in the singing. Sunday mor
ning a duet and chorus, i Mine
eyes beheld the King,” was rend
ered by Mrs. Serratte, Mr. Paul
Rodgers, Mr. Price Jacoway, Mr.
Grady Jacoway, Misses liithel Wool
bright and Dana Tatum. Mr. Will
Cureton, Mr. Paul Rodgers and
Mrs. Serratte sang a trio Monday
evening. Tuesday evening Mrs.
Serratte and M ss Dana Tatum sang
a duet.
During the services cottage pray
er meeting was held every after
noon instead of one day each week
as usual. Many blessings Wt-re re
ceived in these prayer meetings.

school J. W. Cantrell, of Rising
Fawn, made a tplendldtalk on the
“Needs of our Sunday Schools.”

BETTER SCHOOL HOUSES.
By Miss Dana Tatum.
Firmly as Ave believe in the im
portance of education, there is lack
of interest in numberless things,
and Avliat is neglected more than
our school houses? The time of the
old log sclioolhouse is past, in fact,
this is a day of prosperity, and
should Ave not have a comfortable
place for the teachers and children
of our country? I say comfortable,
yes comfortable, for.many of our
schoolhouses are not. Many com
munitios can not have a winter
school on account of bad school
houses. Are the coming genera
tions to get their education little
by little, attending school over five
months in each year? Let us hope
that the day is not far distant
when Dade county Avili have school
rooms which are equal to any in
the country.
Next to the church what speaks
better for settlements than good
schoolhouses and Avliat is the pur
pose of the people is not having
them? Particular spirit should be
encouraged f-r the persistent and
emphatic proclamation of the
deeper aspects of educational sur
roundings and for fervent prophet
ic appeal in order to arouse the
flagging interest and to keep the
people from forgetting that it is
for them and their children. There
used a proper impression that im
agination Avas ol value only to ar
tists, poets and story tellers. Re
cently hoAvcver are those who are
not philosophers beginning to re
alize that perhaps the philosophers
have known all a ong that there is
a vital relationship between imag
ination and the common things of
life.
What of the health of both
teacher and children avlio spend
the last tAvo, months of school in a
cold, damp building? Perhaps the
building 1 aks and Avhen it rains
one can scarcely ttiici a ary place
large enough for the occupants of
the room. Then again countless,
window panes are missing. Per
mission is given to the children to
leave their seats and gather about
the stove, which perhaps is smo
king and one can hardly bear to
remain within tAventy feet, of it.
Teacher and children have to con
tend Avitli this for hours every
school day.
Almost any one will be moved
with compassion on seeing another
seriously injured by a street acci
dent, and Avili go to his assistance
without stopping to count the
cost. The concrete case touches
him, appeals to him. Yet today
hundreds of patents are letting
their school building remain in a
condition which is simply murder
ing the children.
Mr. Davis has said in one of his
talks on Psychology that it is the
nature of man to remain in indo-1
lent passivity. Is this the trou
ble with our people? Every par
ent will answer in the negative.
They do not intend to be cruel
perhaps they do not exercise im
agination. *'
Do not mistake imag
ination. Some place a wrong con
struction upon it and to them it is
fancy. There is a great difference
between imagination and fancy.
Suppose one hears an noise at the
door itt the night and in his mind
sees someone there trying to break
into the house. That is not im
agination but fancy. Imagination
is of the deeper things, and this
developed will bring great success.
Then why not use a little imagina
tion in the upbuilding of our
school houses.
The furniture of the school room
should be thought of as much as
the building itself. Take the av
erage country school house they
have no desks, and penmanship
can not be taught correctly. Future
men and women, and some of the
greatest of them, are being mould
ed in the school rooms of our ru
ral districts, and we should strive
to give them the best advantages
possible,
