THE SOUTHERN SERVES THE SOUTH
As the South grows
the Southern must
keep pace
Freight traffic on the Southern Rail¬
way System has nearly doubled in
ten years.
With the South growing at its pres¬
ent rate, traffic a few years hence
v\4jll be double what it now is.
Many millions of dollars of new capital
will have to be found for increasing
the capacity of tracks, yards, terminals
and shops, and the purchase of cars
and engines.
This needed new capital will be at¬
tracted to the Southern if the profits
from its operation are maintained at
a level to establish a broad market for
its securities.

Jewel Virginia
Rutherford
Does it seem right that Dade
County with her wonderful set¬
ting just at the foot of historic oid
Lookout Mountain, should have
so much sadness and sorrow with¬
in her borders? No, humanly
speaking, but “God moves in a
mysterious way his wonders to
perform” and one of His mysteries
has been performed in the snatch¬
ing away of one of her v> ung lives
that of Jewel Virginia Rutherford.
“Jewel” was everything which
her name implied. She was sweet
and pleasant at all times and al¬
ways showed that beautiful smooth
disposition of which anyone could
be proud. She was a member of
the Centenary Methodist Church
of Chattanooga, and was active
in Sunday School work. As an
employee she was ever faithful to
her trust and never let anything
come in between her and her
work. Her position with the
Interstate Life and Accident In¬
surance Co. will be hard to till.
She was a devoted and a compan¬
ionable sister. It can truly be said
of her,
‘•None knew thee but to love thee,
None named thee but to praise.”
We cannot understand these sor¬
row's which come into our lives,
! but some day the mysteries w ill he
made clear to us.
“Not now. but in the coming years,
It may be in the better land.
We’ll read the meaning of our
tears
And there, sometime, we ll un¬
derstand.”

Advertising Did It
1 Wrigley, the chewing gum
man, has explained how he
built up a business of millions
of packages a day.
He has done it by sticking
to his one line and advertising
it. He spends over a million
dollars a year in buying news¬
paper space to tell the world a
bout 5 cent chewing gum. Me
has educated people to chew
gum and chew VVrigley’s. He
did not stop shouting as soon
as he attracted attention.
H« says you must keep it
up or the buyers will forget
you. Whether yours is a 5
cent or a $50,01)0 business, keep
telling about it.
