Christmas—1037
By RAYMOND PITCAIRN
National Chairman
_ Sentinels oj the Republic -
Again, throughout our own and many
other lands, men pause to remember
the first Christmas night that brought
to a troubled world not a new panacea,
but a New Spirit.
It was the Spirit of Peace: borne on
a celestial song which not time, nor
greed, nor human ambitions have ever
quite muted. With each recurrent
Christmas it echoes in the hearts of
men, as centuries ago it echoed over
the star-lit hills of Galilee.
It is a welcome, a necessary, refrain.
It comes with a message to all.
To the humble and the obscure-
first to hear it on that solemn mid¬
night—it tells again that peace and
strength and comfort come from
sources infinitely deeper, infinitely wiser
than any earthly leadership.
To the powerful and ambitious that
seek new empire, it tells again that the
King of Kings came not in military
glory, but as a Prince of Peace, who
continued to conquer long after the
strongest legions were dust.
To all who strive for grandeur and
the pride of great possessions, it tells
again that a humble stable, with Its cot
of scented hay, looms larger in the
mind of the world today than the rich¬
est palaces of Imperial Rome.
That is because the New Spirit which
came with a Song in the air and a
Star in the sky is the spirit of love
and compassion. While it rules, hatreds
and warring rivalries between man and
man, between class and class, between
nation and nation, are forgotten. When
it fails those hatreds flare anew.
Christmas, then, returns as a call to
all mpn w to keep that Spirit alive.
Through successive generations, hu¬
manity has sought to hold the Song
and follow the Star — often failing.
Through our own generation and
to come, Christmas reminds us, the
; quest must continue until “the
jof violence is o’er.”
1 And then the ancient message,
’’Peace on Earth, Good-will toward
Men,” shall have glorious reality
well as Imperishable beauty.

’M NOT afraid," the small boy said,
“That Santa Claus will be misled
Because we have no fireplace deep
Or chimney broad down which to creep.
A radiator seems too small
To let him climb or even crawl;
Eut none the less on Christmas day
Well Know that he has found his way
“For when our radib near by
Borrows the lightning' from the sKy
And brings, to chase away our gloom,
A brass band, right into the room,
I Know that such a clever Saint
Will never let his heart grow faint.
Some new improvement, never fear,
Will bring' him here for Christmas cheer.”
