Funds Needed
To Get Parity
The spot price of 8.1 cents
per pound for cotton sold in
Kebi nary, 1988, was exactly
half of the parity price of 16.2
ecu is per pound, Frank C.
\Vard, Administrative ollicer
j„ charge of the Agricultural
Adjustment program in Geor¬
gia. said this week.
In other words, a hale of cot¬
ton would buy only half the
amount of goods this year
that it would in the years from
|<)07 to 1914. Last year, a hale
of cotton would buy approxi¬
mately three-fourths the a-
,nount of goods a bale bought
in 1909-1914. The huge cotton
crop of 1937 quickly reduced
the things a hale of cotton
would buy to the present level.
Ward said that parity cotton
payments of 3 cents per pound
w hich cooperating farmers are
vet to receive for their 1937
cotton crop, will narrow the
spread between the actual
price they received and the 16.2
cent price which they should
have received.
“The 1938 Agricultural Ad¬
justment Act,” Ward said,
‘'continues the prvisions for
parity payments to narrow
that gap between the amount
of goods that a man should
he able to buy with the pro¬
ceeds from a hale of cotton
and the amount of goods he
can buy with it.
That provision, however, de¬
pends on the funds to he pro-
