Last Monday, Dec., 2, the 57th Con- | gress of the United States convened. Seventy-seven of the Senators constitu- j ting a quortim were present. The House j of Representatives also had enough present first day to go ahead with their jisual work. It is currently reported ..at the gov ernment has purchased the Danish West Indies. The Danish press and people in general throughout the king dom are opposed to this sale of their Western posessiors. We believe Un-. cle Sam knows a “good thing” when he sees it. Two train wreckers of Montgomery, Ala. were sentenced to twenty-five years im prisonment in the penitentiary for attemp ting to wreck the Sea Board Air Line two miles east of Montgomery. Twenty-five years is a long time to serve, but human life is a pretty costly article and must be Apitected and preserved at the hands of ( the law. There is much being said just now concerning the prospected enacting such laws will protect the negro from lynchmgs at the south. We are getting lerribly sore over this useless harangue. Let more be said and done about the jHstand swift execution of our criminal daws and there will be less occasion to contemplole the horrors of lynch law. -3t'h e Georgia Legislature iu bringing the present session to a close leave many bills to be considered by the people of the commonwealth. One bill which we think will most certainly give rise to much diversity of opinion ts the one proyidiLg that all connty officers shall be elected for four years ,term. As to whether the passing of this bill will be a betterment to the electiou ystem of the present is hard to say. president Roosevelt sends Jjis first message to Congress December 3rd. The message is very lengthy and seems eminently comprehensive. He eulo gizes the late McKinley, at tacks anarchy with gloves off, jumps flat-footed on trusts and combinations, ,talks very comforting about opr West Indian and far Eastern posessjons. opposes ac increase in standing army, ‘favors an increase in seems to be yery anxious for peace—and in fac makes mention of a great many other subjects of great importance to the country at large.
