The Ga. Legislature adjourns today.
We hope they have been successful in
passing such bills as will be unanj- :
mously approved by the yeomanry of
the state.
Hon. Bourke Cockran delivered a
decided pro-Baer speech at a Chicago
meeting, in which he espouses the Boer
cause and predicts final success for the
South Afrikanders.
The Soldiers' Home Bill has passed
in both the Senate and House of the
Georgia Legislature and now only the
Governor’s signature is needed to do
the job definitely. Anything looking
to an attempt to make the last, days of
our noble ex-soldiers more pleasant
and comfortable will not fail to meet
the hearty approval of every patriotic
citizen in the Empire State ofthe South-
Andrew Carnegie still continues to
show his generosity. His last move in
this direction was an offer made to
President Roosevelt to giye ten million
dollars for the establishment of a great
Uniied States University in the city of
Washington. Mr. Carnegie’s name
will yet go down in history as one of
America’s greatest Philanthropists.
'Some prominent Afro-Americans of
Birmingham, Ala., have announced
their intention to appeal to the Supreme
Court of the United States to ascertain j
if the late law passed in the state of
Alabama disfranchising a large per
cent of the negroes in that state is Con
'stitutional. We hope they'll get con
sideration at the hands of the court,
but we are satisfied they will feel worse
after takipg t-har brfure taking.
John Homrighous, a dentist of Matten,
Illinois, after having corresponded with
his cousin sweetheart for twenty years, su
icided on account of a doubt as to his fit
ness of temperament to wed his cousin.
A fear on his part that the SB,OOO in cash,
which he had saved, was inadequate to
meet the demands of matrimony is also
assigned as a prominent cause of his self
murder.
This county, as is generally known,
abounds in minerals—coal and iron—
which is so very extensive that this feature
has attracted the eye of the eastern capi
talist more than once. The iron supply
in Dade county is, without doubt, sufficient
to engage appropriate labor, in working
same, for at least a quarter of a century.
We expect some day,(we hope not far dis
tant,)!® see a regular, hustling, booming
Birmingham right here in the State of
Dade.
The recent State Road Terminal investi
gation led by Hon. Byron Bower, Chair
man of committee disclosed the evidence
concerning the condition of the \V. & A.
K. K. Mr. Bower, whom we were pleased
to meet, gave out the statement that the
road is in splendid condition; that the
property in the terminals Atlanta and
Chattanooga, was to remain unchanged,
for the present at least, and that if eithei
terminal is improved bv buildings or oth
, eraise, Atlanta would have the preference,
, It was also learned from him that tne pres
ent lessees, the h'. C. & St. L. By. Cos. were
fully complying, in detail, with their con
tract. These facts are overwhelmingly in
favor of the success of Georgia’s business
fact in holding fliis very important prop
erty of the state.
—r • mm,
The Sanipson-Scley controversy
wains ahead of anything of the
kind ever occurringhi the United

Americans; a regular organ-grind
