Uncle Sam’s financial prosperity is
■hown by recent statistics crediting the U. ,
8. Treasury with 100,000,000 dollars sur- j
plus Remember this is surplus. It looks !
lise now is a splendid time for war taxes
to take another tumble.
Carl Atlieno, of Omaha, who had been
. in a hypnotic sleep for five days awoKe to
find two wives claiming him. This state
ment has a wholesaleish aspect; we would
be more than satisfied to realize Carl’s ex
jperience on a retail basis.
The present blizzard has wrought untold
suffering on the people throughout our
southland as well as those of the northwest.
One lesson to be learned from recent expe
rience is that the south is most always
. forced to face these blizzards unprepared
to meet them.
The coming Cosgressional race prom
ises to bo interesting. Among others
who may become candidates to repre
sent the 7th in Congress, a prominent
man of Dade ha s been very ftattcringly
spoken of throughout the district.
The amendment to £he state consti
tution providing that all county offi
cers shall be elected for four year terms
will not go into effect for 1902, as the
people will baveaehance next stale
election to accept or reject the amend
ment.
The governments relations with its much
boasted territory in the far East is, from
late dispatches very disappointing. Gen.
Chaffee expects serious trouble any day.
It is feared that there may occur a general
American massacre at any hour. If the
officers and authorities in the Achepelago
“Know whereof they speak,” the prospects
for peace is much gloomier than at any
previous time. fl
Richard Pearson Hobson of Merrimac
and kissing fame has at last got his con
sent to take a “better half.” The only as
pect oi Mr. Hobson’s present matrimonial
intentions which we do not understand is
.why and through what agency this Ohio
yobng lady has managed to touch and take
the heart of him whose experience in spon
taneous love-making extends over a terri
tory frozen from .Maine to sunny California.
Chili and Argentina are raising their
bristles and growling at each other terribly
of late. It will he recollected by Unde
Bam that Chili is very unruly and disobe
dient whereas Argentina has never given
us trouble of account. These two Soutli-
American states have a little controversy
over a matter wjiich might be compromised.
The United States government in being
their protector might with all ease pose as
their disciplinarian. 1
Walter G. Holt, of Jacksonville, Flori
da, has been acquitted of the charge of
murder under peculiar and mysterious
aspect. It appeared that Holt was board
ing with Mr. and Mrs. (’ruse. A pistol
shot rang out in Cruse’s room. Cruse was
dead with a pistol ball in his head. Evi
dence showed that Walter Holt come out
of Cruse’s room immediately after the
shooting. Mrs. Cruse informed the people
that her husband had suicided. Holt nntl
Mrs. Cruse positively denied the Coroner’s
verdict to the effect that Holt was Cruse’s
murderer. Strange wasn’t it?
A\ ith the coming of Christmas we ma v
hope to be with the vast throng who are
anticipating a great and glorious time. It
costs us nothing to be with the multitude,
but unless “in the course of human events”
some more fortunate brother hears our pe
tition for the loan of a small pittance for a
ini mule holiday dinner, we fail to discern
wherewith we are to be in position to sing
the songs of contentment and happiness or
parade the prosperity of this great govern
ment in which we are permitted to exiet.
In our imagination we can see the fatted
calf all bedecked with holiday ornaments;
the smoking tunsey as he sleeps hi* last
sleep on a bed of rare ornamental design
surrounded with all that would cause* the
inner man to rejoice with songs of praise,
but oh, a dearth of reality—there’s the rub.
Great is Schley and grand is Dewey. The
hero of Manila his right hund to
the hero o! Santiago and the country rises
as one man to cheer the pair of noble vic
tors until the welkin rings from the Ap
palachians to the Rockies. The skeletons
of sunken war vessels on the beaches at
i aVite and Santiago will bear for years
and years testimony to what those two men
diu and dared for the United States of
America.— Ex. , .
And wli<> will da re'say that tie above is
nut as true as the gospel?” The great
u . august court of inquiry may find
against tfie hero of the most hath contested
bartl ; of liie Spanish-American v ar ‘scrap,’
but the people are not to take the dose
without a murmur and the howl of con
demnation will ascend froiu the eitizeurv
nt this country from Maine to California,
and from the Great luiKes to the Gulf it:
