The new battleship Missouri will
be launched next Saturday at Newport
News. Virginia.
The'Good Roads Convention will inept
in Columbus, Ga., in January. We do not
doubt but that Columbus will prove itself
worthy of the honor.
Argentina and Chili are said to be
preparing’to settle their Itroubles with
out bloodshed. This news will be most
gratifying to the civilized world.
From observation we can say that prob~
ably more poor, distressed children were
fed this Christmas in Georgia than lias
been done for years. The Salvation Army
played conspicuous in the jjood work.
Attorney Little of Birmingham on
Christmas eve during temporary insanity
shot and mortally wounded W. L. Dodd
liii client. Dodd is dead and Little is be
ing taken care of.
m
It seems that Booker Washington has ex
tensive business with the President. We
guess Booker is looKing for some fat posi
tions for his people in the south and we are
sorry to say that we think he is knocking at
the right door. Maybe we are wrong.
Booker just goes to the National Capitol to
attend swell dinners. That’s all.
Governor McMillan of Tennessee sent
Christmas gifts in pardons to seveu con
victs in that state on Dec. 24. Whether or i
not this was the proper thing to do in the 1
case it may be truthfully said that those
seven criminals were naver happier before
and will never be more so again in life
than they were ClirisDu^eve.
While in Alabama’s capital, recently,
we visited the capitol building. This old
but beautiful structure, while of Anti-Bel
lim design, is considered very interesting
to the traveler on account of its history.
It was in this building that Jefferson Da
vis was inaugurated president of tlie C. S.
A.-on Feb. 18th, mi.
Inscribed on the splendid monument
erected to the memory of Confederate sol
diers and seamen in Montgomery, Ala-
banja. we were much interested to read the
following beautiful lines:
“When this historic shaft shall crumbling lie
In ages hence, in woman’s heart will be,
A folded flag, a thrilling page unrolled,
A deathless snug of Southern chivalry.”
■>
Engineer White of the Big Four (C. C.
C. & St. L. Ry.) with rare presence of mind
and swift execution of thought saved the
lives of a great many passengers Christmas
eve near Kansas, Illinois. While running
his train at a speed of a mile per minute
lie discovered a large drove of cattle on the
track. He could not stop in time. He
dare not slack, so pulling the throttle wide
open he hit and ground to pieces ten ani
mals of the herd. The great speed of the
train kept it from leaving the track anil
the passengers were saved.
We fully agree with the Constitution
concerning the mad carouse on Atlanta’s
principal streets Christniae eve night. We
rarely ever saw anything like it. One
thing which favorably impressed us was
the splendid manner in which tbs police
handled the crowd. We talked with some
officers on one of the principal thorough
fares on the above occasion and were in
formed that they had the police barraeKt
fuli of prisoners and it was not then 10 I*.
M. But our hustling, busy proud Atlanta
is all right notwithstanding.
The World’s Fair, St., Louis, 1903 prom
ises to be fully abreast of the times. N.
better location could have been selected on
the fconlinents. We look forward to this
great with a feeling of pride, on its
success, in advance. The honors and lau
rels which is to be accredited our great re
public in the next decade will, no doubt, 1-
such as will cause every American to hi
glad he is a resident of the New World am
we expect the St. Louis Fair to be proud
ueut in arriving at the verdict.
A\ hile in Geoigia’s fair sea-port this
week we were much impressed withs me
features of the town. It s magnificent
parks; its numerous evergreen shade trees,
which are to be seen in splendid array on
■every important thoroughfare; its level ami
well paved streets; its luouuuieuts of noteo
soldiers—Count Pulaski and Sargeant Jas-
I’ er being the most conspicuous; it*- courte

With the arrival of New Year reso
lutions and reforms will occupy the
thoughts of millions of people through
out civilization. Who can show us th£
man or woman who never fjas aspired
and prayed for something belter? Who
j will dare attempt to convince us that
! the way to achieve the happy results of
| substantial reform is to speak much
; and long about it. This is not the tiay
! for idle promises, unkept pledges, vain
declarations but what the world needs
is actuol doors—real, living workers
for the happiness of humanit} - . In ma
king up our platform or resolutions for
the new year we hope that men and
women everywhere will bear in mind
the rule that will promote most happi
ness and peace, universally. Do you
' want to know what it is? Well, just say
the nicest things in the nicest manner
abont your neighbor. If you hate
your neighbor, please don t mention
i his name at all. Do any of our renders '
! doubt for a momerf that the human I
tongue is the most powerful factor in
the production or destruction of peace?

of die foreign stage was offered not long
ago, Sarah Berniiardt said to an inter
viewer in Brussels:
I have found the American women much
superior to our women. Tlie American
girl is elegant and pretty. She niarrieuas
late as possible, which is explained by the
fact that she enjoys absolute iiheity. The
young girl in Europe kas only one aim,
and that is to get married in order to es
cape from the thraldom of (lie laniily. On
| the other hand, the American girl post
| pones marriage because while she is single
she avoids the inevitable burden tof matri
mony.
Tlie American girl is a treasure not with
out appreciation in her own land. It is
good sometimes, however, to catch a
glimpse of her as she appears to the trained
observation of experienced and cultured
visitors from abroad. We may feel that in
tlie joy of her independence she occasion

Two young gentlemen named Poor and
Little led tlie third and fourth daughters
to tlie altar, and not long ago, if one of our
Western contemporaries tells the truth, the
youngest of the little flock gave her heart
and hand to an estimable citizen of the
name of Hogg. Everything passed off
pleasant, until the guests were partaking of
of tlie wedding supper, when the disconso
late father got tip and said:
“1 have taicen pains to educate my
daughters that they might act well their

SOUL-STIRRING PRAYER.
■ Skinmarj.
An amusing occurrence i.- related by a
gentleman who has recently return, and from
a trip to the Indian Territory. He tells of
awhile minister out there who recent.v
conducted a meeting for a colored congre
gation. The minister had delivered what
he thought a most convincing and soul
stirring sermon, at the conelu-ion of which
he called on an oid negio deacon to lead in
prayer. The deacon responded very prompt
ly to the invilnti n, and the minister was
greatly surprised at iiis prayer, which was
as follows:
“Oh, Lawd, gib him de eye oh tie eagle,
dat lie may spy out sin afar off; glue His
ban’s to de gospel plov.'j tie his tongue to
de line ob truth; nail liisear to tlie go-pel
pole; how his head away down at ween hiS'
kuees, and his kneez ’way down* in some
lonesome, dark and ltarrer valley, where
prayer is much wanted to he made; ’noint
him wid de kerosene lie ob salvation, and
set him on fire.”
A GOOD RECOMMENDATION.
“I h iye noficcc! that the s tie on
