Pritoria newspapers of recent date affirm
that the British need re-epforcements there,
as the Boers are gaining strength daily.
We shall not venture on the jy iliable ef
fect this news will have on Americans as
reported by the papers in general through
out the country. Being kinsfolk to Brit
ain, America will experience a hesitancy
on this delicate question of “for or against”
the success of the Boer arms. One thing is
notedly apparent, that is the Boers do not,
from available information, need any help,
whatever. The trouble and attendant de
velopments, in regard to this remarkable
war between, government and
one of the weakest on the globe, has been
of a very surprising nature from the com

The dawn of another vesr la smiling Sp
oil us, so let us forget our “short comings”
during the past, and profit by same as the
new year goes gliding by. “1902” bids
fair to eclipse the record of many previous
years, as viewed from various standpoints.
Capt. Joe Lyle and family of Chatta
nooga spent this weeK among relatives. He
was called to Nashville on official business.
Miss Victoria Wells of Cole City is the
guest of Miss Mary Sinediey.
Miss Ada Ford of Hootier spent Sunday
with the family of Saiu Lee. She was ac
companied by her sister, Mrs. Jessie Has
well, a charming widow of 14 summers.
“Variety is the spice of life,” so we call a
halt, long enough to chronicle another
wedding.
At “high noon” Tuesday (3) with the
snow-capped peaks of Mt. Etna as a silent
witness, and only a few friends present, th
“marriage rite,” which made Milton Jones
and Miss ilattie Mason man and wife, was
pronounced in solemn words by Esq. Jake
Ellis. Mr. Jones is quite popular, while
Miss Ilattie, a very fascinating brunette, is
the second daughter of Col. Thomas Jetler
son Mason, a man whom every state can
not boast of.
Kev. J. A. Darr of Jasper dropped down
among us Monday, and gave us “a shake.”
He was looking after home paper, likewise
is interested in the tombstone business, so
if you should be carried to “Abraham’s
bosom” from overpatrouage of the county
paper will place a nice epitaph to explain
the cause, fully of your demise. Come
again Brother, your presence is like a ray
of sunshine on a wintry’s day and your
conversation as manna for hungry souls.
A sociable at the home of Mr, and Mrs.
O. M. Blevins Monday night was euj'oyeo
by all present.
A wedding on the “gretna green” order
failed to materialize, but we really thinK
parties are rather juvenile to take up re
sponsibilities which usually belong with
married state, so children stay with your
“mammy.”
We would modestly suggest th t our
friends who “sallied forth with such high
colors into the journalistic field a few short
mouths past, stop their “back-slideu” and
stick to us in “close communion.”

the poor baby could hardly breathe.
I gave it the medicine as directed
every ten minutes until he "threw
