The first load of tanbark for this year arrived at the railroad yester day. If P. T. Bnrmim was a humbug, he clearly demonstrated the fact that advertising had “millions in it.”—The Franklin News. i mm ■ A New York man has just been killed by a cork. he bottle has finished off many a victim, but the stopper has heretofore been con sidered harmless. —Atlanta Jour nal. _ __ When Harrison No. 00 returns I to Washington i.nd Frenchy No. 1 is hung or acquitted, what will be come of our “first class” dailies? A big barbecue is contemplated about July 4th by the 1 ons of Vet erans of Dade county in conjunc-| tion with the old vet’s themselves. | By next week the whole matter will probably be determined. In Chattanooga this week the Recorder put a fine of $5 upon a man for taking one strawberry out | of a lot on exhibition in front of aj store. The Recorder probably, ne'*er read of an account of how J Pecks Bad Boy” did the grocery man, Thesub-Treasurybill will bean unknown quantity in future polit ical contests. T. Dobbs as a War relic and which w. very highly appreciate. “The Rebel” copies the article from the London Times just after Mc- Lellan had been driven back from Virginia by Lee and clearly indi cates <he English vi*-w of the war at that time: “There is probably at the pres ent moment, in Europe, but a sin gle society where the defenders of this hateful and atrocious war could make themselves heard. The impartial opinion of every civilized nation is being more and more strongly < xpressed against the enterprise in which the Feder al 8 are embarked. The orators of the Northern States may inveigh tis much as they please against the interferences of England and the mob may shout scorn of English advice and defiance of English arms; but English opinion is after all, the opinion of the world and we may hope that, in spite of af fected indignation and highflown eloquence, ‘ho good sense which I-;! i ni e and >n r coun t,,.. „tii ••a' Uiwy tu, en 0 k -prevaih” j < <H \TV nuium* An ad valorenetax for road pur poses is a step toward a better road system for Dade, but a necessary adjunct to a good road are county bridges wherever needed. For the past two years we have urged the necessity for t wo or three bridges in Dade county. Our last assess ment for taxes showed a million dollar increase in the taxable prop erty ot the county over the pre ced'd ing year. Suppose that in any locality those mostly interested, should, by private subscription raise half the amount money necessary to build a substantial bridge, why should the county re fuse to appropriate the other half for a bridge which is the duty of every county to furnish its citizens. By a private subscription the fact is shown that the bridge is needed that those directly interested are willing to pay for the benefits they expect to derive from it audit does away with the idea that the bridge would be only a local benefit. In a matter of this kind it would be impossible to benefit all alike, but let us have that which would be of greatest benefit to the largest num ber of our citizens. Our next Grand Jury will prob ably be confronted with a proposi tion from private persons agreeing to pay half the cost of an iron bridge over Lookout creek and should the county authorities re luse to appropriate a few hundred dollars for a county bridge it will place upon some one the imputa tion of a bitter sectional fe. ling together with a niggardly disposi tion which should not exist with public agents. 111 starting?up thi* paper we were urged by our friends to “consider all interest*- aud keep cool.” Good advice! Now we would ask the inert hunts of Trenton and Rising Fawn where are the people' to do their trading? Is it to the best in terest of ti.e public to trade at home or to go to Chattanooga? Remember we must “cons’der all interests and keep cool” which we mean to do “God being our help er.” I, it be to the interest of the public to do their shopping at Chattanooga, should we not tell them of th p fact? No one should he so far deluded as to think wlia{ we say will not be read for from present, indications -the people of this county know a good thing when they see it and this paper will lie read in nine-tenth rf the homes in Dade county. In Kansas, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and South Da kota the farmers have captured the old party machines and will never let go the hold they now have secured. Pelfer, Tillman, Gordon, Buch anan and Kyle, personally register th* rising tide of revolt against the subserviency of Democracy and Republicanism to the monopoly rings.—Nashville Issue. Ah, surely it must oe a false claim any alliance oignn can lay to the Alliance having weaned Gor c don, Tillman and Buchanan from the folds of Democracy. No, the honest Alliancemen of Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina wouldn’t think of stating such a false proposition. Any statement like the above should teach unsus pecting Alliancemen to be careful in swallowing everything the Alli ance organs should see fit to dose out. In recognizing our appearance in the journalistic arena, Bro. Sha ver of the Chattanooga News says “Judging from the initial number Editor Br ck is destined to make the fortune of both himself and his city.” When we know that Bro. 8. has played the part of a country journalist in our native State, we are a little doubtful as to whether we should accept a grace ful compliment probably well meant or to reject it as a piece of disguised ridicule. It is a pity that Dade county cannot make a display of her won derful resources at the World’s Fair, J . • ntU v- RjjigifH*. Last night about 10 o’clock when the 3rd section of No. 17 arrived at New England the fin* Durham bull of H. V. Tavlors took ;i sVn his head todisput'* forth- , ; : which he did to the con -: ; damage of the V. G. S It : hr iiguig disaster a-ul fin untie, death upon himself. The engim and lie's 1 * cars passed over the bul without leaving tie* track, hut the next ten ears were made a con ■ pletewreck besides tearing up the depot platform. A oonsid *• amount of freight will be either damaged or entirely lost entailing quite a loss upon the company when taken with the damage to cars, delavingof trains and the ex pense of clearing up the wreck. It was eight o’clock before the track was sufficiently (dear to allow t rains to pass. No one was hurt in the wreck. It is shown in evidence that’he gathering on Saturday , Maxell 14 b embraced several thousand of the first, best and even the most law abiding of citizens of this city, as sembled —as it is the right oh American citizens—to discuss it public meetings questions of \>-j import. We find the general sentiment among those witnesses and also in our interviews with people, that the verdict, as rendered by the ju ry, was contrary' to law and evi dence and secured mainly throueh designing and u scrupulous agents employed for the special purpose of defeating the ends of justice.! At that meeting the determination j was shown that the people would | not submit to the surrender of their rights to the hands of mid night assassins and their powerful allies. The above is taken from the re port of the Grand Jury at New Or leans in reference to the lynching of the members of the Mafia. The Italian government no longer has a pretext for withholding its ven gence against the government of the United State.-, and Uncle Sam will noyCike a snooze while Italy considers the matter.
