An exchange intimates that our “style” for conducting a country paper is incorrect. Ability has something to do with the style one adopts. Charles F. Crisp should occupy a seat in the United States Senate as an acknowledgment from the State of Georgia, of bis ability as a statesman and as an endorse- ment of his record in the Lower House of Congress. Without an evening mail from Chattanooga the usefulness of the Chattanooga Evening Hews is less ened along the route of the A. G S. It. R. Tha new schedule is a severe blow to the News 'and we re gret it very much. The course adopted by the Alli ance element of the Florida Legis lature to defeat Call for the United States Senate meets with a general condemnation. For over a month a dead lock has been maintained by reason of an adhereance to the two-thirdsTuleT'At last, however, the Call men elected their man with a bare quorum but by a log mrjority. —' m ♦- Many a good mans bead has gone jOtY on the sub-treasury block, but it is to be hoped that Senator George, of Miss., may be able to hold’his own in the war on ac count of his opposition to this ob noxious measure. The State of Dade News is the name ©f a newspaper that has bobbed up in Trenton to sing the praises of Dade county. —Public Ledger. Yes, we bobbed up to sing the praises of Dade county, while the Ledger bobbed to sing the praises of Kensington. We have the biggest spot upon which to bobb and it will probably take us longer to cease bobbing. Its amusing to hear the silly re marks that are made about a coun try newspaper with a ‘“patent out side.” People do not seem to think that a business cannot exist profit ably when expenditures !jue larger than the receipts. Its cheaper to run a “patent outside” than it is ! to get out a home print through out, besides the matter in each would be about the same. The predjudice existing against a pat ent. outside is unfounded and reason. t A North Georgia paper has a particular fondness for dishing out to its readers ghostly', unreasonable and sensational matter. In a late issue we read of a head less man attacking two young men and rendering them motionless un der ghostly influences; and of a murderer who had been hanged twice and pronounced dead, after which he made a good farm hand and threatened vengeance upon witnesses who swore against him. A newspaper should contain newsy and instructive matter, but when it descends into sensational lies its usefulness is gone and it should be suppressed. Sons of Veterans. At-a meeting of the tkms of Vet erans last Saturday, ii was decided to have a barbecue and basket din ner at Trenton dr Highland Park on Saturday July 4th. A commit tee of twelve wa appointed to so licit funds and baskets with gener al powers ot arrangnents. An invitation has been extended Gen. .John B. Gordon to deliver an ad dress to the old vets, of Dade. A brass band wili be on hand to fur nish music for the occasion. Ev ery old ex-Oonfederate soldier in the county is cordially invited and, it is earnestly hoped all will attend. A liberal contribution from the business men of Trenton would bring fifteen hundred people to Trenton on July the 4th. It will be the biggest thing in the way of a picnic ever known in Dade coun ty. On June the 14th, the Sons ot Veterans arc to nmef at the [court house and perfect all arrangments aU the sons over fifteen years >l<i turn out- From Rising Fawn. i Mr, Editor:— ln a former issue your invited honest criticism to your manner of conducting your paper ana announced a willingness to consider all outside advice. I as a paid, up subscriber would res pectfully suggest that you take a milder course and adhere to a more liberal policy in your treat ment of that number who do not take your paper. Coercion shonld be the last resort toward the ac complishment of any object. Men may be led any where but to drive them is not always an easy matter. Now, in regard to the coufse you have adopted with the merchants who do not see fit to advertise with you frankly 1 must say I do not approve of it. Understand I be long to that number who believe your paper a commendable home institution and worthy the sup port of all who have an interest in home industry and thrift. Your paper should go into every home in Dade county and be paid for. and where a merchant has a busi ness to justify the outlay he should advertise his wares. Asa friend who takes an interest in everything and every institution calculated to develop Dade county, I make the above luggestions and without the least taint of unfriendliness. Amicus. If the above is lacking in logic at least it has the merit of frank ness. We admire your manliness Amicus and respect you as a man for you speak like a gentleman. Nevertheless your advice would be good and wholesome were your ar gument not based u]A>n false prem ises. You admit it to be the duty of every good citizen to support his home paper and of every merchant who has any thing to sell to adver tise. Agreed there! Now, if neith er perform this duty where the int proiyiety of someone telling them of it in plain English. Who, a more proper person than we to whom that duty has not been per formed? Now as a matter ot pol icy. Thfere are men who would do a wrong thing, or neglect the per formance of some duty if they know they would not meet with a strong condemnation somewhere. Make a man see the right if you would have him do the proper thing; and when you make a man j see the littleness of a mean thing !it is then easier to make him quit the wrong and seek the right. Let! a man who will not support his county paper know what we think of him and wlmt his neighbors think of him and that man wil forsake his littleness and pay tiis dollar like a good citizen. If those who desire to help us would be as outspoken as we have been this paper would be on a boom in a very short time. Doe’s not the eame reasoning apply to the merchant? Certainly it does only in a more striking manner. We consider the mans influence who will not help support his county paper as worth nothing to us even if he did all he could to aid us. You take with a bad reputation in his com munity and all the mean things you can tell on thatedog will not arouse a particle of sympathy for him neither will it injure the one who shows him up in his true light People enjoy looking upon a true portrait ot a •‘.sctiiawiiy” and they are not going co got mad at the painter. When the scalawag sees his own picture and don’t try Jto brush up a little neither good noi harm can come of him. MASS MEETING. In pursuance to a call made by Judge J. A. Bennett for a meeting of the citizens of Dade county to meet at the court house to-day for the purpose of selecting delegates to represent Dade county in a con vention to be held at Chattanooga Tennessee on June the 10th for the of taking steps looking to a representation at the World’s Co lumbia Exposition. Avery res pectable number of the citizens of! the county assembled at the court house and were called to order by .badge Bennett. Cpon moti 1 Judge J. A. Bennett, S. H. Thurman, Chairman. Secretary. —cm A Convict Stabbed. Last. Monday morning two con victs got into a difficulty at the lower camp at Cole City and one was seriously cut with a pocket knife.
