Don’t miss the pic-nic at the Bennett place to-morrow. Mr. John Crabtree, of Chatta nooga, spent, last Sunday at homo. Mr. Crabtree, is having a nice picket fence built around his resi dence. The popular Case House will soon be Overrun with Summer guests. Miss Maggie and Mr Tom Con nally are visiting Leon Connally this week. M iss Alice Fonts, of Charleston Tenn., has been visiting the family ot Mr. J. B. Williams. Mr. and Mrs. John T. Keener visited Tie family of Mr. J. A. Case the first of the week. Prof. Watson left for Scottsboro this week upon a business trip to bo gone seveial. days. We have had enough of rats with this issue and will drop the sub ject ‘Tor good.” Being crowded this week we were forced to "‘cut down” our corres pondents this week. A communication from Cole City is rejected this week from the fact that the name of the writer is not given. If Dade could afford a few more E.S. Brazletons wo would rival the most popular country weekly in the land. Mr, anil Mrs. G. W. M. Tatum send more copies of the News out of Dade county than any two of our patrons. Mr. Wm. Bates and family ar rived from Birmingham Sunday anu will take up thoir residence in Trenton. The picnic and dance at High land Park last Saturday was a success and highly enjoyed by those who attended. Mr. Thomas Cummings left for Boston last Sunday to attend a meeting of the directors of the New England Cos. W. T. Hughes is agent for the ‘‘Domestic,” the best of all sewing machines. If you want a machine buy the ‘‘Domestic.” Peyton Pace and Chester Daniel each propose to give a sheep for the barbecue and basket dinner Ju ly the 4th. Avery large party from Trenton are in attendance at the closing exercises -of Terrell College at Dechard this week. Wo arp deeply grateful to our patrons fot the kind and generous support giyen us so far; and while our patience may be tested by those who are determined to fight us, gratitude shall never bs lacking for our many friends, Misses Ida Pierce and Carrie Lumpkin, of Highland Park and New England respectively, were in town Wednesday. By combining a basket dinner with the barbecue the committee hopes to provide a sufficiency for the immense crowd on the 4tn. Mrs. Sallie Morgan, of Cleve land, and Miss Mattie Morgan, ol Morganville, were the guests of Miss Migie Crabtree last Monday. School will soon commence at the academy which makes a ne cessity for the building of a bridge across the creek to enable students to get to :he Sulphur Spring. By a typographical error we sta ted that Messrs, Allison and Ta tum would commence school at the Academy July the 26th. which should have been July 6tli. Byron Tatum has gone to Leba non Ohio, this week “from whence” he received a box of sour cherries a few days ago. Wonder if those cherries had any peculiar signifi cance. We must urge upon our corres pondents the necessity of cutting their letters a little shorter than usual as we want to give a space to each correspondent from every pre cinct iu the county. Hon. G. W. M. Tatum says he will introduce a bill at the July session of the Legislature to create a county court for Dade county if the people want such a court. Let us hear from someone on this sub jeet. A sheep belonging to W. F. Neatherly came home Irom the mountain last week sheared of a heavy fleece ot wool and minus a bell. Mr. Neatherly should be thankful that the sbeep was allow ed to return home. The Chattanooga Times is seek ing to have the W. & A. R. R., ousted from Chattanooga. To be lieve what the Times says we would think the W. & A. was trespassing upon the whole of Chattanooga, when really the R. R. has some priority over Chattanooga herself. DIED—An infant of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Wingfield died at Cole City last Sunday afternoon. Al though it had been sick for some time death was rather sudden and unexpected. The interment was at the Baptist church North of Trenton. To the young parents we tender our heartfelt sympathy. — From Rising Fawn. Mb. Editor: —Since my last communication the Railroad au tnorities have made this place a flag station for their cannon ball trains; so we are elated and I’m sorry I didn’t write something to take back and apoligize for. By the way our young friend Jim Blevins has a regular job braking on a. freight train and I predict that he will make a No. i man and will be conductor some da}% if he don’t too soon forget that its not so high to the top of a bridge from a box car as from the bank of the creek. So be careful Jimmie and never stand up till you’ve crossed the bridge. The Rev. Wra. Blevins and Smith Adkins went to the furnace last Sunday and assisted the Rt. Rev. Peter Anderson in his revi val. If Willie’s eloquence and Smiths singing etc., cant raise the darkey’s drooping spirits theres no use getting Sam Jones and Mike Allison. I learn that Rev. Mr. Aiken and Mr Pickle are going over to-day to assist Peter. That’s right, I believe iii missionary work at home. Then, it costs less to convert a nigger than it does a Chinaman and he’s worth more. But the boys say is going over just for fear that Wili Blevins will make a Methodist of Peter who has here-to-fore been a staunch Baptist brother. Don’t be mousy on that score brother Pickle, for the Methodists in this circuit are two sting} ‘osunport a Minister of Peters cali’ he knows it. Well. I was iv the other day too, and among oth er things I learned was: Charley Killian has bought a house and lot above the big spring and says he now has as much right to go in Sugar Hollow as Dr. Fricks or anybody else over had. Bob Steel and Bid Stewart de clare that they just accidently went to the Lime quary well the other morning, bu f , that the moth er of a beautiful young lady who gets water there about that time of day met ’em and gave them “hail Columbia” to such an extent that those accidents will probably ‘cease —I mean at the well. Mr. and Mrs. Atridge have gone to bouse keeping and are “at home” to their many friends. Mason Herndon says Lizzie Johnson bites faster and harder than any nigger he ever fought be fore and that he wouldn’t have hol lered quite s quick as be did if the men in the stock house hadn’t been wanting the water he had gone after. W. T. Murphy goes to Kensing ton every few days. 'Make haste Pat and bring her back. The furnace has made an aver age of 115 tons of good iron per day since it has started up, which doubtless accounts for the serene expression on Capt. Connors jovial phiz. The company has had to get more convicts on account of the scarcity of free labor. Then where is there room to complain ot hard tiirrs when labor is scarce at such liberal wages as that company pays? Of other things I saw and heard [’ll tell at some other time. U. U. From Wildwood. Mr. Editor : — Here we are agair, but may get in the soup this time. You will please allow me to say right here that there is nothing personal in any ot these commu nications unless expressly so stated. The request in our last commu nication for the school report was not intended for a cast at anyone The word “steal” was used simply to carry the idea that there was no economy in the mode of distribu tion of the funds according to the 4 present law. The fence question: We will take as an example for illustration the 974th, or creek district. The total amount of ‘stock in this district which habitually runs outside will not. exceed in valuation $1250 and the cost of fencing the crops of this district is not less than $lO -and this fence will not last upon an average more than eight years. So we see that the annual cost of fencing costs an amount equal to the gross value of stock. Now this stock costs one-third of their value to winter, also they will destroy an amount equal to one third of their value of crops on ad joining farms by occasional raya ges. So we see that the farmers loose every year an amount equal to SBOO. A sum w*hich will pay their taxes, or run a school twelve months every year. Is it any won der that we complain of hard times when there is such an amount go ing to naught annually? Our sys tem of living in this country is like pouring water upon sand. In stead of talking so much about who is president we should look more to home economy. I do not mean that w r e should not look to the in tegrity of representatives and offi cials but should look to both . J, B. Lea. Bacc—A Rat.
