depot platform, Tom Tatum, a son
of G. W M. Tatum, attempted to
ride across the track before tlie
-train reached the crossing. With
his horse in a gallop he reached the
plank flooring at the side of the
track when the horse slipped and
fell upon the track throwing the
boy squarely between the rails in
front #of the rapidly approaching
train. With a presence of mind
rare in one so young, Tom succeed
ed in getting off the track with a
few bruises before .he t ain eached
the crossing. The ho se being f igfit
ened, made no effort to escape aud
was struck by the now sio l ' v mov
ing train. which ground off a leg ;
making it necessary to k II it upon
the spot. To say the least very
scrioes accident was narrowly
