The Chattanooga News has a pe
culiar way of making ‘‘yecountry
ed,” feel at home when ho goes to
Chattanooga.
A prominent gentleman of Ca
toosa county says Geoigia has a
weak set in her legislative body.
Who says nay ?
A third party formed from and
by the disruption democrats of the
south is preferable to their com
pany in the fold. Let every dog
have his kennel.
A certain element of the south
ern alliancemen are content to cor
rect certain evils “within the ranks
of the democratic party.” What
says the western alliancemen ?
The Democratic State convention
of Ohio declared the party in
favor of fixed salaries, instead of
fees, for county officers. This is
an important reform proposition
that appears to be gaining favor
with the democratic party.
What does Brother Block call a

The laige bridge across Shiloh

Community pride is a good thing
to have, it is the key note to indus
trial advancement and the banner
of success; no community can get
along unless it’s citizens have pride
enough an it to make them work
to keep abreast with other commu
nities, If we all do not care ful
mar community it will degenerate
very rapidly.

Editor News : — Having noticed
on several occasions your comments
on rhe “Third party” movement I
am inclined to be a little inquisi
tive ar.d ask a few questions on
party matters.
Ist: Cannot a democrat or re
publican favor the sub-treasury
plan and be a democrat or repub
lican,?
2nd: Of what docs the demo
cratic party consist ? An drgan
ized body with boss, sub-boss and j
smaller bosses down to the ward
boss, to prance arcund with whip
in hand to keep laymen in line ; or
does it consist of a mass of people
who believe in a particular Nation
al policy ? If the former, I would
like to know who some of the
bosses are ? If the latter, I would
like to know if Watterson, Randall,
Cleveland and Mills are all dem
ocrats.
3d: Would all the views of
Thomas Jefferson on political ma'-
ters ba applicable to the present
time ?
I do not ask the above questions
because of my political views, but
because I tnink answers to them
would be interesting reading.
John Henderson and Airs. Bettie
Wilson were married last Sunday.
There was the heaviest rainfall
at this place on Saturday morning
that we have had for several years,
considerable damage to crops is
reported.
Tire “pink-eye” with the cattle
in this vicinity has not been so se
rious as was feared a few weeks
ago.
From a circular from the Staff
school commissioner to the county
board of education, which we saw
a few days ago, the Board has the
authority to employ teachers at a
salary. We think this is a step in
the right direction, if our Board
has acted in time.
I have not yet learned who Mr.
“Farmer” is honqe I can not
say whether he is on a wire fence,
rail fence, or what is more common
a brush fence, as for my seif 1 have
been hid in a “ouckle-burr patch”
trying to extrjegte infant corn.
J. B. L.
In no platform set forth by
either the democratic or republi
can party has there been an en
dorsement of anything akin to the
sub-treasury measure. A man who
endorses every principle of the
democratic party, yet favors the
sub-treasury plan, is a democrat in
the same sense as the man is a
. 5 . s' *“
Christian who observes all the laws
ot God except the command against
“taking the name of God in vain.”
Cleveland, Watterson and Mills
are ideal democrats. Randall was
what has been termed a “high
■
tariff democrat.”
The same fundamental princi
ples as set forth by Jeliprson ere
endorsed by the democratic party
jof to-day. Of course new ques
tions spring up in the adininistra
! lion of government affairs and we
! are proud to believe Jefferson, were
he alive to-dav would still lie a
democrat among all democrats.
