It costs the state money for a Georgia legislator to distin- himself. A hill is before the Legislature to make 25 per cent, of the wages of laborers subject to garnishment. The Evening News in a recent issue said: “Chattanooga is the home of the prettiest woman in the South.” Every woman in Chattanooga thinks she knows the lady and the News can't afford to explain the delusion. Typographical errors in the average country weekly are es pecially designed to interest that class of readers who can’t compre hend anything in bright editorials. An inverted “q” often furnishes amusement to some people for a whole week. In Kansas City a mob broke up a meeting of the mayor and aider man who were about to pass an ob noxious ordinance. In Trenton we whisper around the corners of certain tranact ions of our Commis sioners but no further protest has been known. An officer of the State senate acts as bar tender to a “blind tiger” in the capital and has for his patrons members of the Legislature. How was it possible for the Legislature to enact the strongest and most effective prohibition measure upon the statute books of Georgia ? The Supreme court of Montana has decided that an editor who criticises a court by publication is not in contempt. In the near fu ture we expect to take advantage of this wise decision to show up the most egotistical fool that ever held a judicial oflice under state authority. The Courier Journal says “Henry Clay would certainly have said something emphatic if be had known how his moderate protec tion views would be distorted to excuse the blunder of his fellow citizens by the monopolies of to-day.” Mr, Clay only advocated a tariff of 20 per cent., and never dreamed that the time would come when the average would be three times that sum. A rich and powerful railroad company is a dangerous thing; a combination of wealth mav be • •/ handled to the detriment of the public welfare. Yet, every financial interest of the country is entitled to the same protection, be it great or email. When the influence of a local politician is measured by the strength 'of his opposition to moneyed corporations, regardless of right or wrong, it is time for the people to consider the merits of Henry George’s scheme. (We are not a Jmillion-heir neither are we a corporation lawyer.) The following bill has passed both houses of the Legislature and after being signed by the Governor is now a law. Section 1. Tnat from and after the passage of this act it shall be unlawful for person for persons to sell, vend, or offer to sell or vend any spirituous, alcoholic or malt liquors, in any quantities, within a radius of three miles of any church, or public or private school in the state of Georgia ; provided that the provisions of this act shall not apply to any incorporated town or city in this state. Section 2. That anv person or persons who shall violate the pro visions of this act shall he deemed guilty oi a misdemeanor, and on conviction shall be punished as prescribed by section 4310 of the code, Provided that the provisions of this act shall not apply to any person or persons now selling liqm rs under a license until such license shall have expired, and, provided further, that nothing herein contained shall prohibit or interfere with flip practicing phy sicians of said stale from dispen sing alcoholic stimulants for mod a! n-.• *in tledr p r ■ -s• e:* f'awn S>o(. Banker, T. E. Baker has gone to Knoxville, and North Carolina points. Dr. Fricks says they may beat him playing checkers down town but he don’t allow anyone to come to his house and do it. Ah there, Eergy! Why don’t somebody get up a hay ride these nice moonlight nights ? Conte boys, get a move on yourselves. Prof. Geo. \V. Cureton said to me this morning in his ,;oft and dulcet tone, “Come and trip it as you go On the light fantastic toe,” It is to be Friday night at Tate & Baker’s Hall. It is said, that a diamond ring that is worn by a certain young man will soon adorn the finger of one of Rising Fawn’s fairest, And soon, soon the time will come When both can chew the same piece of gum. (In the above beautiful and touch ing little couplet all rights are re served.) Thus we that it is cheaper to he married than to live single, and by just such little inter changes of confidences do we learn that marriage is not a failure. Everybody i>' this community will be painfully surprised to learn that our popular railroad agent and genial gentleman, L. W. Nichols, is about lo sever his connection with the Rail Road Cos., and leave Rising Fawn. Having been here for over five years, our people have lookedjupon him as one of their im movable jewels, or at least jewel ers. And while all will congratu late him on the good fortune that is about to come to him, (he in formed me that he expecled a check for fifteen thousand dollars this week,) yet the regrets of the people will attend his departure from our little city. Later. —Mr. Nichols built his “castles in the Louisana air.’ T’was a lottery ticket, and the fif teen thousand failed to materialize Ah ves, Nick ! • “1 he saddest are these, it might have been,” Still sad are these wektn “l never loved a pig Wi h it’s mild blue eye But some butcher would come And take him from the sty.” licie.
