A Picnic At DeSota Falls.
On Thursday, August 27th, Mr,
and Mrs. J. L. White, of Sulphur
Spring, Gii. , Misses Josie and Hen
rietta Hale, and MissCieo Tidwell,
of Rising Fawn, Ga.; Misses An
nie, Mattie and Bailie White, Miss
Lora Lowry and Mr. Forest Low
ry, of Valley Head, Ala.; Miss
Cotnam White,Joe Reese and John
McCurdy, of Ft. Pavne, Ala.; Mr.
Will White, of Chattanooga; Miss
Walta Reaves, of Springville
Ala.; Mrs. J. IT. Hardwick and
Rev. W. P. Hanes, of Ash ville, N.
G\, met at Valley Head at eight
o’clock a. m. and went to DeSota
Falls, four miles South-east of
Valley Head, on Lookout Moun
tain picnicing. DeSota Falls has
been a selected place for picnics
for many years and-is one ot the
iovliest spots on earth’for a day of
pleasure. There is an abundance
of shade trees to make everything
pleasant and comfortnblc,*and the
scenery is unsurpassed. here are
beautiful mos covered racks for
seats and one can sit on the edge of
the bluff and see the water of Lit
tle river as it rushes over the pre
cipic and plunges seething and
foaming into the depths of 100 feet
below where, there is a great basin
in the rock about 400 feet long and
300 feet wide in which the water
is standing to such a depth that no
mortal has ever fathomed it.
The natural rock houses a lit
tle farther down lend enchantment
to the scene. After spe r ding some
time in sketching, sight seeing,
mending the boat, and sheltering
ourselves from die rain, we ate a
good dinner prepared hv the hos
pitable ladies ot our party and one
we enjoyed as only hungry pienic
ers can. After dinner J. S. White,
who had his camera with him,
made a photograph of the Falls
and scenery, including the picnic
party. Wo spent three hours in
sight seeing and pleasure seeking,
which was very much enjoyed by
the young people of the party.
At 3 o’clock, p m. we started for
Valley Head, where we sorrowful
ly bndaee ottn-r good bye and
went to our several homes after
spending a day long to he remem
bered by each of us. DeSota.

With anew hoard of directors
ito direct the affairs of the New
England Cos., new life seems to be
infused into the stockholders as
well as the management. It. is the
aim of the directors to raise fiftv
thousand dollars for (he purpose
of building a railroad from New
England City out through White
Oal> Gap to the company’s coal to
open up the coal veins and to
build coke ovens. Messrs. Tom
Cummings, A, Brown, IL V. Tay
lor and W. G. MorriNon agree to
give $5,000 for this punoose. It is
expected $5,000 more can be rais
ed in Dade court rv and the remain
der of the $50,000 to be raised
in the east.
Mr. Tom Cummings has gone
to Boston to assist in getting up
the subscription, and with his en
ergy and persistent efforts he is
almost sure to oucceed. The Dade
county stockholders should do
their part and we will see better
days in old Dade.
The procession accompanying
the remains bf Mrs. J. P. Bond to
Sarah’s Chapel yesterday was the
largest and most impressive wit
