Terms SI.OO per year in advance.
iSntdred at the postofflee in Trenton, Ga., a.
becond class mail matter.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 18th, 1891
Wild the Georgia Legislature
pass the bill prohibiting members
from accepting railroad passes?
Two toone that Livingston will
see a dead third party before he
makes up his mind, to die with it.
With wars and rumors of wars
the grain market fluctuations are
enough to puzzle the most accute.
The colored republicans of Chat
ham oga, by casting their support
to John J. Irvin, may ekct a dem
ocratic mayor for that town.
When the St. Louis anti-sub
treasury convention has completed
its work it will take forty days and
nights for the alliance demagogue
to recover his breath.
Some of our Georgia exchange.-?
are growing real shaky over the
frequency of train robberies. Jry
our plan, boys. We leave our of
fice door wide open every night,
and have never missed a dollar 01
even a patent medicine newspaper
cut.
That part of what the newspa
papers term as “Bam Jones take
back,” which roads, “By the facts
given tome by Judge Meyerhardt.
etc.,” reminds us of the well known
apology made by a member of Par
liament which was subject to two
meanings.
The democrats of N. Y. in their
state convention Wednesday, vir
tually indorse Grover Cleveland in
his position on the silver question.
Many thirgs may happen before
the next national democratic con
vention meets. Grover has a pe
culiar way of coming out upon the
right side of a question a little be
fore anyone else can see it
The Georgia read congress will
meet in Atlanta Oct. 28th, 1891.
Each county in the state is enti
tled to the number of delegates
double its number 01 representa
tives in the lower branch of the
legislature. We suggest a mass
meeting at the court house at 12
o'clock Monday, next, to select
delegates to this congress. Dade
should be represented.
Ex-President U. S. Hall of the
Missouri Sla!e Alliance is the
most consistent allianceman we
ever heard of and when he prefaces
liis remarks hy saying “I am a
farmer with ever cent I have in
vented in farming and with no ot
her means of revenue, His able
denunciation of Macune and the
whole demagogue element of the
Allieuce order furnishes most in
teresting matter. Hall’s reply to
President Polk’s lettei calling for
his resignation ss a member of tne
national legislature committee
should bi framed and hung up in
every sub-alliance room in
America.
Tax Equalization: A New Law.
Accor ling to the new law of the
Georgia legislature, hereafter tire.
Ordinary will appoint a board of
equalization of taxes consisting of
five members from different parts
of the county whose duty it will
he to receive and examine the tax
returns before being entered upon
the tax digest; to hear evidence
and decide upon the justness ot
each return. The members of this
hoard are to be paid three dollars
-r and ay out ot tha co m ty funds tor
ex;39l’og thirty days.
Ji j. /, t' l HA’ Kl >! TOR,
The country editor ha : become i
a fixture; his permanency is n/>
longer questioned; his condition
will ever remain unenviable. He
conies of that class of mankind
with whom unselfishness most
abounds: he bows his head to re
ceive the ciown of toil and sorrow
without a murmer. In assuming
his burdens he knows they are on
erous, yet he relies upon tbs ten
tier sympathies and the oft deplet
ed pocket book of his careless con
stituency, trusting that a kind
word or aven a dollar may fall to
to him occasionally. He don’t ex
pect much, yet disappointments to
him have their depressing effects
as with the more favored of man
kind. He is placed in a position
to do much for his community and
he gladly and gratitiously exerts
himself for the public good. In
return he solicits a patronage which
costs but little to grant, Speak a
kind word to the editor, and even
if it is not deserved, he is imper
vious to flattery, and will not be
injured thereby. If the editor
gives you your dollars worth your
neighbor should know it and it is
your duty to inform him. The
man living in a county with but
one newspaper and who malicious
ly lends bis infiuence against the
interests ol that paper should be
transported to a land abounding in
ku-klux and white caps, The
hand of his neighbor should ever
be turned against him. Don’t
term your county paper “tnat
thing” or “that nasty little sheet,”
for country editors frequently
have more “grit” than money. If
you receive a better paper than the
patronage accorded, the editor will
justify, don’t have any hesitancy
in admitting the facl —it won’t
hurt you, and you stand a chance
for a local puff. The editor always
returns a f*vor two fold and only
at times does he return good for
evil.
FACTS AND FIGURES,
The following figures prepaied
with much care show r the number
of members enrolled at the Tren
ton sub-alliance since its organi
zation in 1889, and to what extent
the members should be interested
in high prices of both wheat and
corn, and what extent a sub-treas
ury would benefit said lodge. There
has been enrolled 51 members up
to date. In 1890 ten numbers
owned farms, sixteen rented lands
thirty one bought both flour and
corn, and thirteen bought flour on
ly. Wheat and corn being chief,
if not the sole, products of the far
mers around Trenton, thos two
products are given. The Trenton
alliance now numbers eleven
members.
