At the beginning of court an old Confederate veteran came to town and put up a knife board at which you pitched ten rings for ten cents and if the rirg was thrown over a knife the pitcher had a five c<-nt knife ass representation of his good luck. As it happened the old “vet” took board for the week with an old G. A. R. “vet,” (the only one in town), and as it fur ther happened on Wednesday the ring and knife man missed five silver dollars out of his trunk. As it further happened suspic ions wore caßt upon David Kiser, a son of the “G. A. R.” man, and David was at once arrested aid searched tor rhe missing five. A crowd gathered at tne court house, but no trial came off, and the de fendant was finally discharged on ly to be arrested upon a warrant for larceny. The larceny case was continued and the defendant required to give bond for his appearance, but in attemptii g to leave the court house was re-arrested by the Sheriff and precistatelv hurried off to jail. Truly, does misfortune follows close upon misfortune; likewise when a man starts downward no helping hand is outstreched to save. COUNTY COURT. We have long and persistently urged the necessity for a county court for Dade county, and from quarters our proposition has been met with the most determined re sistance by some who considered selfish interest paramount to the public good. In our immediate section of the state Chattooga has a county court operated to the sat isfaction to her citizens and which saves a vast amount of money to the country. It is true that certain counties in the state have tried county courts which, from their manner of organization and operation, have proved ineffectual as an ecouomo cal experiment. This was due mainly from the fact that th< economical maintaineuce of 1 1:< court itself was not considered We have no doubt but that a conn ty court for Dade county can br secured, which would be satisfac tory to the citizers of our county, and at the same time lessen tax ation. If our present Grand Jury wil proceed to investigate this subjeci unbiased bv precedent or uninflu ence by those who have a personal motive in defeating any measure looking to the organization of a county court, the result will bf that Dade count y will have a court which will prove a c*onven ienco as well as a money saving institution. Let our Grand Jun look into this matter. Mr. Thus. Paiker bookkeeper for the Chattanooga Times h in town this week. m 9m Mr. .Jesse Case is tne devi this week. A Bit; FOX HU AT. Ketcherside was tried Wedn *sdav and a verdict ren dered in favor of three of the plaintiffs for four twenty fifths in terest for each of three plaintiffs. This case has been watched with much interest, and is the first of a batch of eases in which the same parties are plaintiffs. TAxeSrises- 9 a Highest Since the War Toe Georgia Legislature, on Wednesday t xcd the tax rate for 1891-92 at 5 58,100 mills. This makes the high -st tax levy made since the war for state taxes. Pen sion appropriation and other ex pensive matters that could not be avoided. The Georgia Legislature has re pudiated the Ocala platform. In three years one of Mitch Pope’s “writ of cempoodle” would not find a man who would admit that he has ever supported such a tiling as the Ocala platform. —THE BEAUTIFUL— k | 94jtii§a|ji o Shc.iestaru most direct into to CHATTANOOGA, HARRODSBURG LEXIN G T O N LOIlIIVlMi: r- FRANKFORT Ciii Aim ati, Pirming ham, Meri dan, m NEW ORLE ‘.NS, Jacksou, Vicksburg & Shreveport.
