COL, JOim G. HALE
A BIOGRAPHY.
‘•Speak of me as I am; nothirg
exiennant, nor set down ought in
malice.” When Hie immortal
Shakespear placed the above words
in the mouth of Othello he laid
down a rule always to be observed
in writing a biography. In pre
paring this short sketch Shake
spear’i rub shall guide ue as we
present to our readers the unvarn
ished story of the life and charac
ter of Col John G Hale. When,
in 1849, this distinguished gen
tleman first made his appearance
in this country, no star of Bethle
hem or of Rising Fawn guided the
wise men to his place of birth, but
upon that bright spring morning
old inhabitants yet remembur that
“ihe earth trembled” under tbs
mighty weight of this remarkable
infant, destined to charm the birds
upon the side of old Fox mountain
simply by the magic of Ins voice.
Of course Col, Hale was too young
to take part in the civil war, but
throughout that dreadful struggle
of four years ‘‘little Johnny,” as
the soldier* familiarly called him,
wa*ever ready to do w hat he could
in aid of the cause of the south.
The Sultan of Turkey stated as
hisopinion a few days ago that if
John G. Hale had bee 1 " <ld enough
to shoulder a musket in 1861 there
would have been a Southern Re
public with John G. Hale as its
president for life or during good
behavior. The school boy days of
Col. Hale were marked by many
little incidents, such as placing
spins vn tnw pro lessors crTim*, uu i
k ri i nir g” the fastest boy in school
p laying all his mischief upon some
~ other boy who invariably frot the
licking and such other evidences
of future greatness. Even at this
late day we know some good men
who will wager that Col. Hale civ
inn from the point of Fox moun
tain into Rising Fawn, a distance
of one mile and a half, in less than
four minutes. Col. Hale was eat
ly admitted to the bar, whidi ;.i
once opened up to him a career i<
Vo envied by the youthful banis
ters throughout Ihe.atate.
While Col. Hale can sit with hi
feet as high above his head ami
t pit as far as any member of t’M
local bar, he bat not yet learned t<

Hill Jersey Farm at Tuscaloosa,
Ala., was calved April 20th, 1887.
Her mother, Miss Winton was
exhibited at the New' Orleans ex
position where she attracted much
attention. A grand parent ot
Miss Winton 2d sold for SIO,(XX).
Miss Winton 2 now has a beautiful

This cow gives three gallons of
rich milk per day which has more

It is strange that the farmers of
Dade do not stock their farms
with the pure strain of Jerseys.
Tlmy are easier kept, give more
milk ana butter and in every way
are so far superior to our common
breed of cattle that no (aimer
should hesitate iu a comparison,
Miss V, inton 2d, now owned by
Mr. Jacoway, should be purchaser
