STATE OF BADE NEWS, PCBLSHED EVERY FRIDAY BEN T BROCK. Publisher- Terms SI.OO per year in advance ii 'l< i,' 'irent* n, Ca., a Mcerd class mail matter. FRIDAY NOV. 20, 1891 Chattanooga was visited with three destructive fires Monday night, the result of incendiarism. Baby Ruth will enjoy the dis tinction of being a daughter of a president while John Jacob Astor, jr., will enjoy his $150,000,000- In the statesman’s ‘‘red book” at Washington. Moses, Livingston and Everett are put down as alliance men, while the other Georgia dele gates are termed as democrats. Why the distinction? ;Oub opposition to the sub-treas ury measurs has caused some Dade county r .alliancemen to believe us an enemy to the alliance, a-d to-morrow bMng the occasion of a big alliance rally at this place it would afford ue much pleasure to witness a public vote ot the mem bers present upon this all-ttbsorb in g question. Aft YOU IN IT? The Inadianapolis convention demands that, the congressman elected by alliance votee should hold no allegance to any party, and that they vote for no man for spea ker whs does not indorse the alli ance demands. They must not go into a caucus of either of the old parties. Livingston says that he was elected at democrat and that he would as a democrat. It was the mast honorable thing Leonidas ever said, and if he will act accord iriulv ho will in a. manner redeem himself from much of the odium in which he is now enveloped. It naw seems that the alliance is committed to the third party idea and lines will soon be drawn. Which side, brother? Will the main body of the Dade county al lianoemen stand by the action of Indianapolis convention? If those who could not indorse the Ocala plat form #ub-treasury and ail, were not alliancemen, whsie does the memoer stand who is not willing to go into a third party? If you are not at liberty to refuse your support to the Ocala platform you must wade in with the third party or get out of the a'ltance. •‘You; pays your money and takes your choice. A Useful Industry. A few months ago the Enter prise Manufacturing Cos. put ma th inery in the Cureton stou® mill and began a lumber and furniture manufacturing business. Work was slow at the first, but gradually our citizens have realized the econ omy in taking their rough lumber to this mill and having it worked into dressed flooring, ceiling, weather-boarding and whatever was needed in building. The bus iness is now thriving and the ma chinery is kept regularly at work A considerable stock of rough lum -3 c her has been laid in and any kind of finished material can now be furnished upon short notice and at prices much cheaper thau would he p jid in Cnattanooga or else where. Even from as far as Mor gan ville rough lumber has been hauled to the mill where it was fin ished into whatever desired Small industries are needed and big things will follow in Dade. It is said that with some men “youth is as lasting as life itself.” For this reason it is not necessary to give any supposed date of birth for the subject of this sketch. Lithe of Jform, a flowing black beard, (whether real or unreal,) and with all the youthful propen- sities for fun and enjoyment, John McMahan need never grow old. Surrounded by everything calcu lated to make life enjoyable be can, while “resting under the shade of the trees,” match two of hi - fine game cocks in a deadly combat and enjoy the fuu a.l to himself or he can take his pack of fifty-two hounds out upon Sand mountain and have the fun of running a deer out over the editor while he list ens in as!o i'bment to the rapid firing * along the route the deer should have taken. Yes, John enjoys his sport with his hounds and his games, but lie has sst. his head upon a fiuanciai undertaking of great magnitude— to make a city ol New England occupies his thoughts by day and dreams by night. Like Caesar, he has twic# refused the crown, hav ing twice keen offered the presi dency of the New England Cos. Who can tell the result of a third tend-, ot this responsible position. It is thought that John’s reason for failing to accept is based upon the tact that the directory refused to allow him to donate his salary to the endowment of an orphans asv lum to be erected by himself and Col. Tom Cummii gs in the town of New England Capt. McMahan has just return ed from a european trip where ho went to inspect the steel industries of those countries with a view ot locating a large plant at New Eng land. While the Capt. is a man of few woida, it is understood from his maneuvers that Maj. Massey 0.-.n R T Dobbs are to he in. terested in this undertaking. LATER —Peyton Pace having agr#ed to take charge of Capt. Mc- Mahan's kennels, Bud Mor.ison now thinks Jotm will turn his at tention to tho development of ou, sister town. Tho Situation. For some time past th**re hai been open and determined resi:-?- ance to the execution of the mu nicipal laws of Trenton by & cer tain element who were disposed to ‘‘take in the town” regardless of the authority of Marshal Smith. They contended that he was unjus l land impartial while the citizens ! generally and the town commis sioners especially upheld the of ficer in what he dH. Without ref erence to any particular ease it is the duty of every man to submit to an arrest whenever required by the town marshal be that man guilty or not guilty of any offence, if Marshal Smith has exceeded hi> authority we don’t concede it to he the duty of the ci A dads to uphold him in the city hall and upon the streets merely upon ex parte tes timony. It is the duty of the board to acquit or find guilty solely upon the sworn testimony in each case regardless of results.ln oth er words, if the marshal is right the board ought to sustain him, but if he has done wrong it is not incumbent upon the board to shield him under the sentimental idea that they “must uphold L.e law.” When an exceeds his authority to sustain his illegal acts is rot upholding the law, but is a thorough while-washing of what ought to be condemned. 'The situation of Hungs are now such that in justice to bin self Mr. Smith should demand a thorough and impartial investigation at the hands of the commLssioners which we have no doubt would result ‘in his conduct being fully sustained and it would h ive ih * effect of showing to th- h'.-.vies# element that he was rigid and that tlie commissioners would stand by shim not because lie was the m.tr. bai but because his acts jv ic ctm me lidcble. A Convicts / ppe>al. The following note was sent to Capt. Connor, the piesent manager of the Dade Coal Cos., by a negia convict who wished to see his brother in another camp: Dear Sir: Asa double barelled shot gun associated with a pack ot tiounds prevents no turn, making a pilgrim ice beyond the confines of tlmenelosure wh* rein this note is > edited 1 appear be fore vou in this guise for the pur pose of respectfully asking you to kindly allow me the privilege of going to the upper camp to prayer fully visit a fellow Ethiopian hear ing the self-sawie strain of blood and deviltry as myself, while guar anteeing you that I will not em brace the opportunity to elope with the guard, I subscribe myself with all respect. Your humble servant, Thos. Harvey. Dispathes from the scene of the alliance meeting in Indianapolis report considerable discord raised bp the anti-sub-treasurists From the fact that the secretaries of sub allianccs fail to report delinquent members, several states in which there is a considerable falling off in membership are behind with as sessed dues. In Mississippi about 15,000 members are held respon hie tor the dues of a membership of 45.000. The number of dele gates to 'lie convention was cut down Iwo-fifths from a lack of funds to pay the delegates.
