Weaver of lowa and Field of
Virginia is the ticket launched
forth bv the On .aha Convention.
The Peneylrania riot is a strik
ing illustration of the beauties of
the McKinley tariff.
We will have verv little politics
in the country until the base ball
season expires, then the ‘'Cleve
Steve” battery will get in its
work.
ihe contest for Gubernatorial
nomination in Tennessee has been
intensely exciting. The fight has
been between the straight Democ- J
racy and the Alliance. The defeat
of the Alliance is assured, and its
State President, State official or
gan r.nd other more active leaders
have renounced their allegiance to
the Democratic party and openly
went into the Peoples I arty. It
may not be a very pleasant refiee
tion to many members ot the or
ganization, yet the fact neverthe
less remains that the Alliance.has
proven itself a most wonderful suc
cess in breeding the Peoples Party.
The National Peoples Party was
launched upon the billowy sea of
politics at Omaha last,Monday and
Tuesday. It was swaddled by
members of the Alliance. Theie
was great rejoicing and singing of
praises. They resoluted to save
the country from the swift and
sure destruction that awaited it in
the event either of the “old par
ties” were contined in power at
Washinton. They nominated ex-
Greenbacker Weaver, of lowa, for
President, They adopted the Al
liance platform. It was a regular
Methodist campmeeting affair.
1n.1882 Tom Watson was in the Leg
islature and repeatedly voted for Hon,
J, C. C Black for United States ‘ ena
tor, as against (Jolquit and ot 1 . jr dis
tinguish- and democrats, Black now the
same so. tof a democrat that lie was in
1882, but Watso i atths In al of the
third-party ticket opposes Black for
(Ym cress.
Four years ago Watson stnmped the
state as a Cleveland elector lie now
lights Cleveland while Cleveland re
mains the same scut of ad mocrat.
Two years ago Watson received the
democratic nomination for Congress,
and was dieted as a democrat, but his
every act in Congress has been opposed
to democracy and he is now the rank
est third-partyite in the land, This is
the sort of a hair-pin Watson is, If
democracy is rotten, Tom Watson is
tbe most mellow thiug she ever foster
ed.
Our election for Commissioners
is over, although a contest has been
entered. As to what the result will
be no man can presume to say. A
fair election is it legal election and
if we have not had one the court
fttavil 1 so shape lb* result as to n ake
Bt legal and at the same time do
to all parties. If soma par
ties thought the election fair an I
legal, they should court a fair
investigation ; on the other hand
if others thought the election un
fair and illegal and propose to
right the wrong, who is to say them
nay? Each, faction is sure to get
its rights at the hands of the court
and until the court passes upon i!
merely a difference of opinion ex
ist, which does not justify ill. feel
ing and abuse. Oar town is small,
every citizen must be a neighbor to
every man in t'he town and we
cannot afford to sever our social
relations for opinions sake. Neigh
bors, let us reflect, be conservative
aud not abuse our friends because
they have opinions of their own.
Le' us have harmony.

I am a candidate for Senator to
represent the -44th. Senatorial dis
trict in the next general Assembly.
In soliciting 'lie votes of the citi
zens of Dade and the 44th, Sena
torial district. I make the state
ment that i am not a professional
Politician, and no chronic office
seeker. I have been requested to
run by the substantial citizens of
Catoosa and Walker, who look
upon the efforts of a few men(po
[liticalwire workers)in their efforts
to dictate to rhe rest of the districts
and control their politics with dis
favor. And this evident departure
from usages established in calling
a primary without consulting the
interest or requesting tlie participa
tion of Walker oi Dade, either by j
holding a District Convention, even j
should one be considers 1 necessary
is meeting the condemnation and
censure, it justly deserves Citizens
of Dade, there will be no true ex
pression of opinion from the citi
zens of Catoosa there will not be
over one hundred and fifty votes j
polled in the county. Are you go- 1

up the cause of unpopular candi
dates? *

WET 01! DRY?
DRY SHF IS.
All the world don’t know about
rt, hut all Trenton knows that the
election for commissioners last Sat
urday was an interesting affair of
no small dimensions.
It was a big day in Trenton’s his
tory, and every citizen feels an in
terest on one side or tha other.
When the polls opened the fun be
gan and the fight.was made to a
finish. Roth sides were confident
until about the time polls closed,
when the dry men put in their
dryest look and the wet were eor
r spondinglv jubilant. When the
last ballot was taken from the box
anl counted the wet men learned
that there was a slip somewhere
tvvixt the oup and the lip-Trenton
had gone dry. R. P. Majors and
W. P. Pace were run upon loth
tickets and of course ran clear out
of si lit. J. P. Jaeoway received
32 votes on the dry ticket. M. A.
R. Tatum and T. H. B. Cole each
received 29 votes on the dry ticket.
J. A. O’Neal on the wet ticket re
ceived 28 votes, and G. W. M. Ta
tum and J. A. Oureton received 27
votes each on the same ticket.
Ever since the polls closed and
the result was declared, the losing
crowd have been wondering how
the thing was uuae and manifest
adasiietosee the machine work
once more.
