We do hope Congress will not
idouble the size of the silver dollar.
,Already they look as big as a sau
|cer to us.
It’s real consoling to the fellow
;who has always been out of funds
tto look about him and see that be
lis no worse than his neighbors.
In John W. Maddox the 7th,
♦Congressional district has a repre
sentative upon whom the people
can rely at all times. Just watch
bis record.
Our old triend Jack Majors has
made anew deal and is now stand
ing at the head of the Carrol ton
Times.
Jack is getting to be a bummer
of late years and we hope he may
succeed in his new venture.
A man may think he has an
opinion upon the financial ques
tions of the day., hut if lie will
lead all the speeches now tiding
made in Congress his mind will be
in a maze of doubt as to what is
best.
Road Funds Distributed.
Tuesday was the day set by the
Ordinary for the bonded road com
missioners to meet and apportion
•he road fund to the several dis
tricts. All the commissioneis were
present except Mr. Woife of the
Creek district. Ofily or.e point
was seriously discussed and upon
that different opi> hVs exltisted.
It has been held by many that the
proper way to dis'rihute the road
fund was to put. the greater parr of
■ the funds tor a few years upon tin
' first class roads of the county aud
put them up iu a permanent and
lirst class shape, only giving to the
second class roads a sufficiency to
buy tools, powder, etc. It lakes a
liberal mind to consider the public
good before private interests, and
the proposition has been strongly
opposed. Avery liberal cotnpro
lonise was effected considering the
tttivng support, whi di the second
l-oa Is luid noon the heard. It
was determined that the first class
roads, of which there are about 34
miles should have $13,00 per mile
while the remainder of tn* fund
should go to the second class roads
consisting of abou’ one hundred
milos. About $lO. per mile will
go to th*- second class r ads.
All of ihc road fund is not avail
able at present, bul some disincts
have, by working out tfieir ad valo
ruiti taxes aim lot use 1 1 e rsnare and
the n ;id funds.
Two Undelivered
Speeches.
The crowd ;it' the re-union last
6aturd y*ni issed two very tine?
speeches in an accidental way.
B. T. Brock was down on the
programme tor the address of wel
come and he had gone to the trnub
h to prepare what he thought a
a \trv 4 levant address. On Sat
urday moaning lie went to Chatl
a'.ooga'cxpecU ug to get back on
t,.e 9 o’c ock train, which v\as
three hours late.
Hot*. G. W. M. Ta'urr: was snb
s! itut. and hi and made a very appro
priate address. Hon. J. B. McCol
.om Into :on taxed his linn 1 and
I'ilenis in g-ltmg up an oratorade
ti> at tor tt.e old Yets.
A lew have lietorc the re-union
('ii flii' goes.)J. B. had mount
cd astiimp out in the woods in a
secluded place and was delivering
that speech to an imaginary audi
ence. About that time three hunt
ers with double-barred shot guns
came along and being charmed,
crept up within a few feet of the
speaker. Suddenly those guns ex
ploded in quick succession and
little pieces of oratory was scatter
ed in the woods, while the orator
himself was demoralized and an
nihilated. Jim afterward got to
geihersome of the pieces of that
exploded speech and made an elo
quent address before the old sol
diers. Of course it wasn’t all there
but it was the best speech of th>
evening inspite of the heavy tire
to which it had been exposed.
A Successful Meeting.
Rev. F. F. Threadgiß after hav
ing conducted a revival meeting at
Cave Springs, in which much
good was accomplished, closed the
New England meeting last Sui -
day night under very flattering
circumstances. Several penitents
were at the alter, after nearly sixty
conversions. More than thirty
were taken into the Methodist
church while quite a number will
go intoother churches.
Rev. Tiireadgil! is making quite
a reputation as an evangelist.
Oh, ’that limit!
Early Monday morning of last
week, two wagons loaded with a
camping outfit consisting of a tent
cooking materials, bedding, etc.,'
left Rising Fawn for Sand Moun-|
fain.
J. M Cantrell, L. W. Nichols, |
J. R. Allison. John Whit 9, Jfthn
Long Sr, R. P. Tatum, B. T. Brock,;
Joe, Will and Charley Stewart and
Fayette and John Austin composed
the party.
It was a jolly crowd of sports
men and they were after all the
fun that is going.
Before noon Monday the happy
hunting grounds wore reached and
by a, “babbling brook” the tent was
pitched. A dozen or more squirrels
killed in route were cooked for din
aer the fitst day. A short drive
was made the same day, hut no
game was routed.
T on the next day the fun be
gan in earnest when a big four
.-pike buck almost ran over Can
-1 roll and John White. In the ex
citement, both guns went off acci
dently and in the scramble to get
away, the deer snagged himself
bad y, causing blood to flow copi
ously. When Bill Stewart smell
ed the biood of that deer no dog
was necessary to keep the tml and
he led that crowd of hunters a
chase of about four miles through
the woods to where the dogs had
beyeu the deer in a large and deep
mill-pond. John White began fil
ing his shot-gun(at the d„er lie
e aid )at a distance of 300 yards.
Cantrell would have fired, but
couldn’t find the trigger.
It didn’t lake long to dispatch
the deer wliLli was swung upon a
{ 'o!e and thj triumphant march
to camp began. Within .fifteen
minutes venizon was cooking upon
the camp fire and tne feast las ed
as long as the hunt.
Thflfrsdav, the last dav of the
hunt a doe and fawn were jumped
and operator “Nick’ - happened to
be at the right place to operate, up
on the speckled beau tv.
He fired both ha ire Is, but the
fawn came on as if to nestle in his
bosom. N iek had never seen a
fawn and ne didn’t know for sure
it was one. So, at a distance ot
two feet he kicked straight out
with a heav\ hunting boot, which
the night before had been tried up
on Jim Allison, but spikes in the
boot, pierced the little fawns side
ami it fell over dead , iiih* Nick
feinted.
; "L was like hunting for children
j ill a nursery to kiij that little
tawn ami Nick pleaded that Ji ?
didn’t kn .w it was loaded
Just alter Nick kicked the fawn
to death , toe old doe galloped by
Bob latum, who fired a shotjust to
have it said In* iin-d at a deer. Bob
said he didn’t want to kill the old
doe, auu that sh- wasn’t fat “no-
how.”
After these sad accidents the
party returned home to read what
the Times had to say ol the “pot
hunters,”
