THE CRIME.
Bv the tears and pnrsuasions of
injured relatives, and after being
urged by court officials, the last
grand jury visited the home ot the
girl and returned a bill of indict
ment against Duke Brock charging
him with rapeing Ida Ketcherside
in December 1891. While court
was in session last. March and be
fore this bill was found the girl
had given birth to a child and her
real condition never being sufpic
ioned by her people until a >ut
toree weeks before the birth.
Before court met, Mr. Andrew
Brow nan uncle of the girl had
sworn out a war ait before a Ru-
ing Fawn Justice charging Duke
Brock with seduce:ng Ida Ketchei
sidf, but at court this charge gave j
place to the bill of indictment,!
upon which Andrew Brown’s name !
appears as prosecutor.
In a conversation with Mr. j
Brown and his closest friends I j
learned }hat his desire was for,
Duke Brock to leave the country , ;
and while court was in session he,
said that he wouldnt leave theeoun
ty and intimated that as he bad not ■
prosecution would follow.
The bill for rape was somehow j
deemed insufficient lor the purpo- j
ses sought and by the exertions ol
relatives of the girls two bill- for
carrying concealed weapons were
also found at the same time. In
addition to these charges was sup
plimenfed a warrant to cause de
fendant to make burn! for the
maintainanee of the child, upon
the idea that it was likely to be
come chargeable to the coun'y.
Following close upon the finding
of these bills and insurance ot the
w arrants came rumors of large re
| wards that were to be offered for
the arrest of the defendant.
. NOT AKUESTEB.
That was six months ago and
tee defendant i<* yet free. Know
ing that the trial Upon all of these
cases would be expensive at best,
a fruitless eftprt has been mad 1 to
have the prosecutor, the wealthier 1
man in th county off 1 a reward
in ptoportidri to his wealth, the
hemmutiips# of the crime and in
p oportion to hi- belief in the ghilt
of the accused. If this regard
had been offered the accused wou.d

We wish to thank you for the
patronage and internot you have
manifested in the ach.ol, knowing
the tendency of the people tc neg
lect the all important duty of keep
ing thair children in regular at
tendance. We call your special
attention to the fact, that school
days are not unlike a chain , each
day composing a link, which it
one is broken the power is lo3t.
Barents do not seem to realize th •
confusion and damages done by
keeping .heir children home one
or two days out of a week. He
first gets behind one lesson, then
in trying to catch up he becomes
discouraged, then lie is a drag in
his class the rest of the school,
Parents, this is an important
matter, and ono that interest your
fu*ure welfare and happiness, as
well as vour children, and why
t eglect the training of that litt‘e
one, who in after years will have
to fight lifes stern battles. Are
you going to let him grow up in
ignorance in sight of school just
for want of attention, or ure you
going to educate him so as to meet
these difficulties?
that “youth is the seed time ol
lifts” ami what we do must be
done quickly, You may think
now that yo.i do your chi id a lavor
by letting him rest a day jiv-t to
satisfy a childish whim, but mind
in aitey yeais he will oiftsi- you for
it. These children are but as tal
ents God lias given von, are you
going to bury it and let it sink in
to oblivion, ot ure vou going to
act wisely and let it gain nerve?
If so they will rise up in future to
call you bless'-'f
We will be gtad to have the pa
trons of school to call when con
venient and see our wotk.
