THE BELT OF GREEN.
By Rev. Fredrick Hastings.
The day was stifling. It was
" five degrees in th 9 shade,
i-ouid be hotter, for in South
Australia the heat is sometimes a
hundred and ten in the shade.
Life is an endurance then. The
coolest part of the house will be
sought and that will probably be
the cellar. As for sitting under
the shade of trees then , you would
not think of it.
Nor would there be much to
ineke nature attractive. Every
thing would be scorched, and the
very gronnr< would be dazzling in
its brown/rareness. The shimmer

such patches of greeD be found.
, A cej.ts-G*— farmer managed, in

green. Indeed, all around
that luxurant fodder had
gown, and by care and in-
Lessant watering had flourished.

ches of it night and morning.
Certs laden with it were even sent
Cos a neighboring town, and sold in
y lots. The lucern thus served

As he heard in the distance the

with intense effort as he hurriedly look

you and me! I will go and try 10 beat

Poor fellow! he hardly expected but
that be himself, in a few minutes,
would be a charred and blackened mass
and as for his loved ores,- well, he
dared not think. He could only pray,
“God save them,” He then hurried
off to unloose the cattle and hor es,
giving them a chance for life. The
heat as of Nebuchadnezzar’s furnace
smole him. Spaiks flew over the home

forest was wearing away, as tree after
tree fell crackling and crumbling or
crashing into glowing embers.
