THE BELT OF GRE PIN.
Bv Rev. Fredrick Hastings.
The wheat field was a blackened
mass. Everything was consumed
by the hungry flames, but they
seemed to stop at the green lucern
patch. The fire scorched the out
er rim of it, but. to the man’s sur
prise, did not overleap it. There
was a w ide piece on the side whence
the flafnes approached. It was
wide enough even 1o protect the
dwelling. The flames seemed to
have a mandate. “Thus, far, and
no farther.’’
Peeping from behind a slight
shelter, the farm/" could, see that
the fire was losi/g its power. The
green fodder Ithe cattle had in
it too much *i nsture tn kifc. It
wa ' f It became a
by . uie speedy flames.
jd. I thank thee for thy mer
he exclaimed, and his moist
the fciUf'bf the anguish he
itired. With a wet branch
stened to beat out some sparks
'am on ome woodwork
.<• outhouse, then he rushed to
and drew up hie wife and
'all three were up
in the loom, he could breathe,
clasped them in passionate
. ffirnce. His utterance was chok
ed, was a word all under
sti od : "sieved ! saved! The lu-
kept hack the fire, God be
thanked that #ver that
bit of lucern.”
1 have told you this story with a
purpose. Sin is like a raging
fire; there is only one place of safe
ty; it is Christ’s cross. He is as
powerful to resist the fury of law
and retribution as was the lucern
palch in Australia to resist the
flames r ot the forest fire .

Tlollo, P. I. Nov.*,'24, 1900.
Tlo Ilo*or w Ylo Ylo, which means
being put:! into English, means
iioso nose; is situated on the south
eastern extremity?of*the.island of
Panay, almost ** distant trom
s!anila on Luzon to the north and
Zamboango down uearjj the Jolo
Group to the south. I mean that
the distances are about the same
as the ■ships sail; because absolute
distances signify nothing, and on
ly give us a false idea of the dis
tance of places. So London aid
New York are nearer to each other
in every way except geographically
than to any point between them.
The idea of absolute distances is
one of the mistakes we get from
our geographys, and another is
absolute types. I can close my
eyes now and see the pictures in
Cornell's little old yellow backed
geography, over which we school
boys used to gloat, just as plainly
as we saw them then The Indian
standing with his deer-sain-robe
and gay eagle plume®, gazing a
thousand yeuis into the future.
And the tropical animals! Every
thing the artist could imagine, and
he his a vivid imagination crowd
id into ten square yards of space. A

likes ;;rd dislikes, were rs,
i. ye re, 3 M t eaters. tiliga'ors, etc .
! I always thought of zebras as
(spending their time sprinting in
the back-ground with the ibexes
Of cou.se the artist had to do
something, but the object was io
give the boys a correct idea of ani
mal life. He might as well have
put in the * without the cats, a
j Alice saw them in Wonderland.
I know and old army officer who
I has fought Indians tor thirty years
I and says, the Indians' picture is
all “bosh,” and I must confess my
idet sof tropical life and vegeta
tion have been sadly shaken* For j
instance, there are practically no
birds in Porto Rico, very tew in
Cuba and scarcely any more in thej
Philippines, I mean friendly
companionable birds as we have at |
home. There are numbers of rod, I
yellow, blue and green members of
the parrot family back in the for
est and it is a pi*v that they are
ever brought out, for though, • they
may add to the beauty of a tropical
forest thpy ceitainly have the most
discordant voices imaginable, and
they exert themselves just about
tho time you want to go to sleep
at night or stay asleep in the
morning,
There are no sweet singers like
our thrushes and mocking birds,
nothing except gorgeous many
colored feathers. However there
is more agreement among (he large
strange birds and especially so
among the water fowels. The
ducks, curlews and cranes, white
and blue, are just like their cous
ins at home. 1 nere iy also a fish
hawk which looks like ours, but
here he takes the place of our gull
and acts as scavenger. The Phil
ippine crow is, if possible, a bluer
black thanMns relative across the
water; be is somewhat larger ana
has a much longer tail, but his
caw. caw is just the same.
There is a little fellow distantly
related to our bob white, but of
hardly one-third his size. He is
colored more like the blue quail of
Texas and has several family
characteristics, especially his walk,
