When (ho democratic party four

to doctrines regarded by many as
populistic, Georgia's ablest con

.time Henry G. Turner has not
sought to obt iude himself before

assured that Bryanistn is no more
is it not the proper thine to place
Turner in <lie senatorial chair?

PRISONER ESCAPES.
Sister Gives Him a Pistol and He
Marches the Guards From
the Prison.
Jackson, Miss., July 18.- —Trav-
eling Sergeant Henery of the peni
tentiary returned this evening from
De Soto, Mo., where he went to
bring back Theo. Unseat'd an es
caped convict who had been cap
tured at that place. Mr. Henery
returned with Russard'n hat, 'he
prisoner having made his escape
before Hehery arrived on the seeqe,
an escape that was perhaps one of
the most origininal, desperate and
daring in the history of criminals,.
Runsard was captured about a week
ago by the local authorities af Do
Soto and they knowing the char
acter of the man had taken eve, v
precaution ‘to prevent his escape.
He has,the reputation of being a
had man so the capturers had him
cl.oseb watched by two guards
both cay and nieht. He was also
kept in the third story of a hotel
in a very small room and no one
allowed to see him. Just before
Sergeant Henery arrived Ruseard’s
sister asked to ho allowed to t Q ll
her brother goodhve and accord
ingly she was taken to his room.
Uussard embraced his sister yery
affectionately and while he had his
arms around her slendeg waist in
some way from her bosom he pro
duced a pistol which she had hid
in some manner, and , he coveierl
the guards and .ordered them to
get in front and marched them
down the steps. As soon as llus
sard got. on the ground floor he
bolted into the darkness and has
not been heard from. .All the at
tempts to recapture the escaped
Convict .have .proven failures. Ho
is a very desperate character and
has "given the Mississippi authori
ties a great deal of trouble.

Says That He is Not a Candidate
or an Issue in This
Campaign,
Lincoln, Neb.,July 36. —William
Jennings Bryan declares he should
not he an issue in democratic
Ohio campaign. The Elver leader
declares the convention made a
mistake in criticizing the action of
the party relative to himstjjf. He
says: j‘l am not a candidate for
any office and a mention of the
ifiight have Been construed by
some as ra indorsement of rue for

upon the naked proposition to in
dorse Ihe platform of last year and
then no on* could have excused his
abandonment of democratic prin
ciples by pleading bis dislike for
Mr. Brvan. The convention not
only fai.ed but refused to indorse
or affirm the Kansas City platform
and from the mannei inwhich the
gold element l as rejoiced over this
feature of the convention one
would suppose that the main ( ob
ject of the convention was no': to
write anew plat form but to repu
diate the one upon which the last,
national campaign was fought. The
gold papers; assume that the con
vention refused to adopt tho Kan
sas City platform because it con
tained a silver plank. IT q o it
would have been more, courageous
to have f declared openly for the
gold standard. If the gold stand
ard js good it ought to have been
indorsed: if bad it ought to have
been denounced. To ipm-re lb,
subject entirely was inexcusable.
The money question is pot yet out.

gress will have to deal with it.
Republicans declare that it is dead

Hr. Brytlu comments on parts of
the platform referring to state and
municipal affairs. Fe indorses
the nominee; of the convention
and urges Jheir support." Referring
to tfie senatorial fight and the re
port'd candidacy of John R. Mc-
Lean he says:
“Fid the leaders ignore the
money question in order to please
those who bolted? Or does Mr.
