Uie following lan
• ery sad announcement
. have just heard of the
Judge Wilson. I left him at
„.ock this morning, slightly indis
sad. I was with him until late last
night. I saw him this morning at 8
o’clock and left him at 10. We have
confiremed the rumor through the
telephone that he has just died at the
Shcreham hotel, and I would respect
fully ask the court, if it meets with
the approval of the court, to adjourn
for today.”
Admiral Dewey said:
"I have to announce that owing to
the death of Judge Wilson, of. coun
sel, the court will adjourn for today
until tomorrow morning.”
The announcement of Judge Wil
son's death created consternation not
only among members of the cofert, but
among the spectators, and some min
utes elapsed before people generally
would accept the report.
The judge had been present In the
court all day Monday, and while he
had not participated to any great ex
tent in the proceedings, he had ap
peared physically active and wide
awake to all that was said and done.
The report first reached Mr. Ray
nor in the shape of a rumor a minute
or two after Machinist A. B. Claxton,
of the Texas, the second witness, had
been present on the stand.
Captain Parker and Mr. Teague, of
Admiral Schley’s counsel, immediate
ly went to the telephone. They re
turned in a few moments, saying that
the report had been confirmed.
Mr. Raynor then made his an
nouncement to the court and asked
an adjournment for the day.
All the members of the court, in
cluding counsel for the government
and for Admiral Schley, expressed
the utmost surprise and sorrow over
the news, while Admiral Schley him
self said:
"The news is so shocking that I
cannot trust myself to give expression
to my estimate of the man. I can
only say that I have lost not only a
clear-headed and brilliant counsel, but
also a dear and much beloved friend.
I am shocked beyond measure at the
news and find myself almost unable
to accept the report.”
It was announced at the court room
that Judge Wilson’s death had oc
curred at 11:08 a. m., at the Shoreham
hotel, and that it had been due to
heart failure, superinduced by an at
tack of acute indigestion, coupled with
Bright’s disease.
Judge Wilson was a native of Ohio
and was 78 years old. Early in life
he removed to Indiana, where he serv
ed with distinction on the common
pleas and circuit court benches. He
represented an Indiana district in the
forty-second and forty-third con
gresses. After his retirement from
congress he formed a partnership
with an associate in congress, Judge
Shellabarger, and the firm soon took
rank at the very front of the Washing
ton bar. Among the well-known cases
in which Mr. Wilson was counsel were
the Star Route trials, the Holt will
case, the Breckinridge-Pollard breach
of promise case, the trial of Captain
Howgate for embezzlement, the court
martial proceedings against General
Swann, the Oberlin Carter case and
the Venezuela, Alabama, French spo
liation and Louisiana Abra Mexican
claim cases.

together with an admission
irom the interested parties to the ef

hostilities between the Transit com

It is not difficult to guess that com

in this rude but really businesslike
fashion are the dreams of the “com

The deal was closed Tuesday after
noon by Joel Hurt and Colonel Robert

their respective interests.
It was a cash transaction, and sl,-

The price was a good one and both
Mr. Hurt and Colonel Lowry looked
pleased when the details had been
completed.
An epitome of the properties involv

ANTI-TAMMANY TICKET.
Seth Low Receives Nomination For
Mayor of New York.
The New York republican oity con
vention to nominate a mayor, comp
troller and president of the board of
aldermen met at noon Tuesday and,
after organizing, adjourned to meet
again at night.
The platform adopted arraigns Tam
many Hall as “a band of conspirators
against the public welfare,” and as an
“organization devoted to public plun
der.”
. It charges the administration of the
police department with “buying and
selling license to break the law,” and
the machinery designated for the ad
ministration of justice as being “em
ployed to promote vice and protect
criminals.” The platform pledges the
candidates to do away with “the
blackmail iniquity.”
It further says the election of the
ticket will not mean blue law govern-,
ment, “but the largest measure ®f
personal liberty consistent with pub
lic decency and the maintenance of
public order.”
The platform then scores the Tam
many Hall administration for its fi
nancial management of the city and
charges it with filling the offices with
Tammany workers-.
After the adoption of the platform,
Robert C. Morris formally named Seth
Low, president of Columbia college,
for mayor; Edward M. Grout, of
Brooklyn, for comptroller, and Charles
C. Fornes, of New York city, for presi
dent of the board of aldermen. They
wer e nominated by acclamation,

These are worked by very elaborate

the center rises, beaming a silver plate
on which is to be found everything ne

The inside of the top' has a medallion,
in which is a portrait of the Sultan’s
