What the Southern Folks are Doing???The I News by Mail and Wire ??? to The Constitution. L '*??? ??? - ' The farmers of the south are in ilMuck this yea*, The cold spell of the past week???snow b&.ving fallen in several states???killed the Second crop of oats and leaves the farmer with little seed to sow again, so that the oat crop from which so much was expected, is a fail ure. The. truck crops which have ;made large item for the past few years in the south are set back by the cold of the week. The strawberry farms around Charleston???on which one million quarts were raised last year???are ruined for the early season, and the vegetable crops of south Georgia severely in jured. Larger corn acreage ia being planted because of the damage to oats. In business circles the merchants report the farmers practically out of debt and buy. ing closely and with cash, which is best allround. A safe and heavy spring trade is looked for. In politics therq is little to note. Some op* position is developing in Alabama to Governor O???Neal. The Mississippi legislature has passed a railroad law over the governor???s veto. Pres ident Arthur is working np some southern delegations. The republican party in South Carolina has organized for the campaign, and there is more or less excitement in the other states. The death of M. T. Polk, the defaulting treasurer of Tennessee, in Nashville, closes a sad history, and the usual amount of casu alty and adventure is reported from other points.
