The incident is related, without, however, giving tbe name, both in General Hood's book, "Advance and Retreat," and In Jeffer son Davis a second volume of the ???Hiss and Fall of th* Confederacy,??? page .HO Captain Jackson was a youth of 17 when the war broke out, and went to Virginia against tbe will of bis father. He got on General A. R Lawton's SUIT. At the bailie ofHliarpshurgGfneral Lawton was command. ing Ewell???* division September 17, 18112, and j had relieved Hood's division In Stonewall nel Sheridan a.'ted me if we had any troops broad shouldered, solid set figure, with arms of unusual length and a firm resolution in his face, looking every Inch the soldier. Sheridan was making a reconnoisance. He offered ins my parole, saying it would be much more agreeable for me to ride back with the officers than under the surveillance of the soldiers, who were always disposed to have fun at toe expense of prisoners. X accepted the courtesy. Hr went on to say that some ot our civilian officers of tbe south bad curi ous ideas of parole. They at-emed to think that to accept it wsa to compromise their principles, and that he had had Intelligent gentlemen of the southern army that he bad captured reply to an offer of parole with in- suiting language. He added that he had learned to hesitate In extending this courtesy to captured southern officers. I replied to hint that it simply grew out of ignorance of the matter, end instead of indicating rude- met, evinced tbe stern spiiit of our soldiers in adhering to their cause. There occurred a sharp little incident that illustrated Sheridan's foresight. To the right of the road was an eleva'ed woods where some confederate infantry were posted. Colo- tliere. lie had pruned the truth with Ilia keen military eye. I declined to inform him, He Insisted on toy toiling him what f knew. I refused. A sharp little rpat occurred, he insisting that as my captor he was entitled to Whatever information X possessed, and de manded its disclosure. Fiudirg his menace unavailing lie apologlxid for hi* teeming rudeness, and chatted away. He finally wisely concluded not to tackle the point and retired. 1 found him intelligent and cour teous, a social man of the world, and an agreeable companion. With his sunvity there wss an incisive sort of bearing, speech anti manner that impressed me, and I ven tured the belief that he had bright military promise.
