one of tho greatest sensations with which the com.
munlty has been convulsed. On the 27th ol De
cember last the body of a well kdown livery stable
keeper, Ur. William HKirk, was found In a mill-
stream. At lint U was supposed that tho unfortu
nate man had committed sutolde but an examina
tion brought to light a murderoue hole In the back
. oi hla head which had evidently been made by the
indentation ol a k tmmor. Tho wildcat excitement
followed the dlscove.y. Gueptcion rested upon a
colored hostler named Joceph Palmer, and he waa
arrested. In Jail Palmer oonleased that ho was tho
murderer: that the p,ot for the murder had been
matnted by William Berner, a white
for tho purpose ol robbery, and that
Palmer waa assigned the leak ol killing Kirk, while
, Berner should watch out as a guard. On the mom.
lug of December 24, Mr. Uric went Into bis stable

one ol the stalls. Palmer Healthily crept up behind
