Lee that iilua trate bla gentle aenaibillty, inate aoldlerly spirit, and brave truthfnlneaa. In one of thoce terrific Virginia battlei that mad^blm so famona, he waa passing from one point of the bloody field to another with bla staff. He rode throneh a piece woods in which alongside of tbe road a flut tering bird waa malting a considerable noise. Tbe cause was visible. One of the young in a nest of birds bad fallen on tbe ground out ot tbe neat. Ganeral Leeatopped a moment, dismounted quickly from his horse, irentiy took tbe little truant from the ground and placed it back in the nest, relieving the dis comfort of tbe mother bird, and 1 remounting rode on swiftly to his deadly battle. No in ddent could have better illustrated tbe soft sensibility of bis great heart, than this com passionate consideration for the little trifles of feathers in tbe engrossing demands of great contest of arms. Atanolbarof those extraordinary battles that made that commonwealth of Virginia so historic, tbe carnage was frightful. Torn With distress at the awful loss of life, yet turning with tbe martial instinct, anguished at tbe appalling destruction and manglemert of men, and still swelling with combative spirit of tbe born warrior that filled every fibre of bis frame, Lee unconsciously mut tered to tbq members of bis stair ???It 1s well Ibis is so terrible, or we should get too fond of it." All the teachings of his un doubted piety and the native tenderness of as gentle a heart as ever breathed in a human bosom bad been unable to subdue the fignt- ing blood in this great and natural born knight. Tbe grandest incident related of this noble man, is connected with tho decisive bsttle of Gettosburg??? that turning point of tho war??? that fatal pivat of the south???s success. It is now generally concedeil that the lighting of that battle was a miataie. Generals are usually chary of assuming blamo. In all wars leaders have been ready to deny their responsibility for admitted blunders and de cisive disasters. There hare been some tierce controversies between angry leaders, as to who deserved censure for certain calamitous mis takes, the discernment of whose wrong came too late. It was a crucial test of Lee???s heroic truthfulness, that, ashestoodconfronted with all the shocking details of an irreparablo and glgsntic failure and mistake, and when in the querulous consciousness of bloody ruin, men began to cast around and quarrel over the responsibility. Lee sadly atnl promptly fathered tbe fault. Witts an unparalleled courage of candor, the great mau stopped it all by the utterance: ???Tell the men that I alone am to blame. The mistake is mine." Realising that bis judgment had been at fault, magnantmoua to relieve Ida faithful lieuten ants and brave soldiers, who had done every thing in their power to win what lias about been concluded to be an Impos-tlble victory, veterans, tells tbe following thrilling story of a war incident: The oft-mooted question, "Was ever a desperately wonnded soldier shot dead, at bis own earnest solicitation, by a comrade???? fa answered in the affirmative by yonr hnmble servant. It happened as fol lows: The writer, a member of G. company, first Delaware infantry, waa then attached to the third brigade, (Weber???s), third division (French???s) second corps (Sommer???s). After wading Antietam creek, plunging through plowed fields, stnbble fields ana corn fields, his regiment wss finally located within plain view of the enemy, when tbe welcome com mand rung along the line to ???load and fire at will.??? It was then that our daily target prac tice at Fortress Monroe came into excellent arc, a* msny a poor devil of the sixth Ala bama learned to bis cost. After firing eleven rounds the writer was wounded and ordared to the rear. While retreating la good order, but making most excellent time, hfs route led him through a portion of the Irish bri gade. Here he saw alight that capped the climax of horror. A inemberof thatdevoted brigade was aimlessly stumbling aronnd with both eyes shot out, begging some one, ???for the lore of God.??????to put an end to his misery. A lieutenant of the Fourth New York was passing by, and seeing the poor fellow???s con dition and hearing his appeal, he hatted be fore him and asked if he really meant what he said. ???Oh, yes, comrade." was tho reply. "I can not possibly live and my agony is unendur able.??? Withont another word the officer drew his pistol, placed it to the victim???s right ear, turned away tils bead and pulled tbe trigger.
